Quick Overview

The Rothco Self-Inflating Air Mat is a field-deployable sleeping mat used by operators, campers, and emergency personnel to create a thermal barrier and cushioned surface between the user and the ground during rest cycles in field conditions.

The mat functions through an open-cell foam core that creates negative pressure when uncompressed, drawing air in automatically through the ABS/copper valve. The 190T polyester shell provides moderate abrasion and water resistance, though it is not puncture-proof. Deployment requires site clearing, valve management, and five to ten minutes of self-inflation time, with optional manual top-off breaths for added firmness. The valve is the single control point for all air ingress and egress and must be protected from impact and debris to maintain mission capability.

Thermal performance is the primary operational constraint. The 1.5-inch thickness provides a low R-value suited for temperate conditions only. On frozen ground or in extreme cold, supplemental insulation such as a closed-cell foam pad or survival blankets is required to prevent hypothermia risk. The mat is authorized for primary field bedding, system augmentation on cots or in vehicles, emergency shelter use, and low-signature operations where manual inflation offers a negligible sound profile compared to electric pumps.

Long-term readiness depends on correct storage protocol. The mat must be stored unrolled, laid flat or on its side, with the valve left open to prevent compression memory in the foam core. Storing the mat damp will cause mold and mildew inside the foam, degrading insulation and self-inflation capability over time.

Field Application Steps

1. SELECT AND CLEAR THE SITE: Choose the flattest available ground and avoid depressions where water may pool. Remove all sharp objects, including twigs and pebbles, by hand and with a light source before placing the mat.

2. UNPACK AND POSITION THE MAT: Remove the mat from its carrying case, detach both tie-down straps, and stow the case. Unroll the mat fully with the valve positioned at either the head or foot end.

3. OPEN THE VALVE AND ALLOW SELF-INFLATION: Turn the valve counter-clockwise to the open position and allow five to ten minutes for the internal foam core to expand and draw air into the mat naturally.

4. ADD MANUAL INFLATION IF NEEDED: If additional firmness is required, add two to five controlled breaths through the open valve. Do not use mechanical or high-pressure pumps, as over-inflation causes seam failure and permanent foam delamination.

5. CLOSE AND SECURE THE VALVE: Turn the valve clockwise until snug and replace the valve cap. Do not over-tighten. The mat is now ready for use.

6. OPEN VALVE FULLY TO BEGIN STOWAGE: When the rest period is complete, open the air valve fully to begin releasing pressure before rolling.

7. EXPEL BULK AIR: Fold the mat lengthwise and apply knee pressure along the length of the mat to force out the majority of trapped air.

8. ROLL AND SECURE THE MAT: Unfold the mat, then roll it tightly from the valve-opposite end toward the valve to drive remaining air out. Close the valve, then secure the rolled mat with both tie-down straps placed at the one-third and two-thirds marks along its length.

9. INSERT INTO CARRYING CASE: Place the secured mat into the carrying case for transport and storage, protecting the shell and valve from abrasion, dirt, and moisture.
