Quick Overview

The Rothco Shotgun Shell Bandolier is a high-capacity crossbody ammunition carriage system that holds up to 37 rounds of 12-gauge or 20-gauge shells, enabling shotgun operators to execute rapid reloads during range drills, competitive shooting, hunting, and home defense deployments.

The bandolier's ammunition retention system consists of 37 individual elastic loops, each measuring 1.25 inches, sized to accept a single shotgun shell. The open-loop design provides immediate visual inventory of remaining rounds while allowing deliberate single-handed extraction under dynamic conditions. Shell orientation should be standardized prior to loading, with brass-down positioning offering the most direct path to the loading gate for the support hand.

The chassis is constructed from 2-inch heavyweight nylon webbing that distributes a full load of approximately 4 to 5 pounds evenly across the shoulder and torso, minimizing pressure points during extended wear. The 58-inch fixed-circumference loop is designed for crossbody carry and eliminates the failure points associated with buckles or adjustment hardware. Operators wearing body armor or load-bearing equipment must confirm fit prior to field use, as the circumference is non-adjustable.

Sustained readiness requires disciplined post-use protocol. Shells must be removed immediately after every use session, as storing the bandolier loaded will permanently stretch the elastic loops and degrade retention capability. The system should be cleaned with mild soap and water only, air dried completely, and stored away from direct sunlight to protect elastic integrity over time.

Field Application Steps

1. PRE-USE INSPECTION: Visually and physically inspect the full length of nylon webbing for fraying, cuts, or loose stitched seams. Individually stretch and release each of the 37 elastic loops, confirming each one returns to its original size with consistent tension. Any loop that feels soft, overly stretched, or shows visible tears must be considered compromised and removed from service.

2. AMMUNITION LOADING: Insert one compatible 12-gauge or 20-gauge shell per elastic loop. Do not double-load any loop. Establish a consistent shell orientation throughout, brass up or brass down. Brass-down orientation is recommended as it provides a more direct path to the loading gate for the support hand during retrieval.

3. CONFIRM POSITIVE RETENTION: Test-fit at least one shell across multiple loops to verify positive retention before committing to operational use. Shells should require a deliberate pull to release and should not shift or dislodge under light handling.

4. DON THE BANDOLIER: For right-handed operators, pass the head and right arm through the loop so the bandolier rests on the left shoulder, positioning ammunition across the front torso for access by the support hand. Left-handed operators reverse this procedure, resting the bandolier on the right shoulder. Confirm the bandolier sits flat against the body and is clear of sidearms, magazines, and other mission-essential equipment.

5. AMMUNITION RETRIEVAL AND RELOADING: With the support hand, firmly grasp the body of the desired shell and pull down and away from the body in a single decisive motion to release it from elastic tension. Index the shell to the correct orientation for entry into the shotgun's loading or ejection port. Keep eyes on the threat area throughout the process. Repeat in training until the motion is smooth, consistent, and requires no visual reference.

6. PERIODIC LOAD CHECK: During high-intensity dynamic movement including crawling, climbing, or defensive tactics, conduct periodic physical checks to confirm all rounds remain seated. The bandolier is not a high-retention system, and shells may become dislodged under sustained physical stress.

7. DOFF THE BANDOLIER: To remove, lift the bandolier up and over the head and free arm. Secure the equipment immediately after removal and do not leave it unattended while loaded.

8. POST-USE UNLOAD: Remove every shell from the bandolier promptly after each use session. Storing the bandolier in a loaded state will permanently stretch the elastic loops and render the retention system ineffective.

9. CLEAN AND DRY: Brush off dirt, mud, and debris after each use. If cleaning is required, use mild soap and water only. Never apply harsh chemical solvents, as they degrade both nylon webbing and elastic materials. Air dry the bandolier completely away from direct heat sources before storing.

10. LONG-TERM STORAGE: Store the empty bandolier in a cool, dry location away from direct sunlight. UV exposure accelerates elastic degradation and will reduce retention capability over time.
