Quick Overview

The Rothco 12-Function Stainless Steel Multi-Tool is a compact, field-ready utility platform providing immediate general-purpose mechanical repair and cutting capability for operators, preparedness personnel, and everyday carriers when a full tool kit is unavailable.

The multi-tool consolidates 12 distinct implements into a single stainless steel chassis, including needle nose pliers, wire cutters, straight edge and serrated blades, Phillips and flathead screwdrivers, scissors, a can opener, bottle opener, and nail file. Deployment follows a butterfly-open chassis design, where both handles rotate outward 180 degrees to expose the pliers head. Interior tools extend individually and lock at 90 degrees via a push-button locking mechanism that must produce an audible and tactile click before any force is applied.

Authorized applications span four operational contexts: general preparedness in vehicle or bug-out bag systems, field and recreation use including camping and search and rescue operations, everyday carry for routine cutting and driving tasks, and contingency backup in trade or tactical environments. Scope is limited to light-to-medium duty tasks. The tool is not rated for prying, hammering, or cutting hardened materials, and its fully conductive stainless steel construction prohibits use near live electrical circuits.

Post-use sustainment requires immediate cleaning, full drying of pivot areas, and periodic lubrication with CLP or mineral oil. Pre-use inspection protocol covers function checks on all locking mechanisms, debris clearance at pivot points, damage assessment on blades and screwdriver tips, and verification of the carry pouch snap and belt loop integrity.

Field Application Steps

1. DRAW AND INSPECT: Remove the multi-tool from its snap-button belt pouch. Confirm all implements are fully stowed, pivot points are clear of debris, and the carry pouch snap is functional before deployment.

2. DEPLOY THE PLIERS HEAD: Grip both handles and rotate them outward in a butterfly motion to the fully open position at 180 degrees. This exposes the pliers head and forms the operating grip for the needle nose or regular pliers.

3. EXECUTE GRIPPING TASKS: Use the needle nose pliers for precise work in constrained spaces such as recessed nuts, cotter pins, or wire management. Use the regular pliers for larger objects requiring general gripping or turning force.

4. TRANSITION TO INTERIOR TOOLS: Partially close the handles to gain access to the interior implement channels. Locate the required tool by category: screwdrivers in the fastener suite, blades in the cutting suite, or utility tools including scissors, can opener, and bottle opener.

5. DEPLOY AND LOCK THE SELECTED TOOL: Rotate the chosen implement outward from the handle chassis using your thumb or fingernail. Continue rotating until fully extended at 90 degrees. Confirm engagement by the distinct audible and tactile click of the push-button lock. Do not apply force until lock confirmation is received.

6. EXECUTE THE TASK: With the handles fully closed and the tool locked, perform the required task. Cut away from the body at all times when using blades. Apply only appropriate force within the light-to-medium duty rating of the tool. Do not use screwdriver tips or blade tips as pry points.

7. DISENGAGE THE LOCK AND STOW THE TOOL: Firmly depress the side-mounted push-button release to disengage the locking bar. While holding the release button, carefully fold the implement back into its nested position within the handle chassis. Release the button once the tool is fully stowed.

8. SECURE THE MULTI-TOOL: Ensure all implements are fully nested inside the handles. Fold the handles completely together into the closed configuration. Return the tool to its snap-button pouch and confirm the snap is securely fastened before movement.

9. CONDUCT POST-USE MAINTENANCE: Wipe the tool free of all moisture, dirt, and grime immediately after use. Ensure pivot areas are completely dry before stowing. Apply a light coat of CLP or mineral oil to all pivot points after moisture exposure or on a periodic maintenance cycle.
