Quick Overview

The Rothco Street Shield Police Gloves are cut-resistant tactical duty gloves designed to protect law enforcement, corrections, and security personnel from slashing and edged-weapon threats encountered during pat-downs, subject searches, and debris handling.

The gloves are built around an aramid fiber inner lining across the palm and fingers, engineered to dissipate slash energy across woven fibers and prevent penetration to the skin. A synthetic leather palm with non-skid grip supports secure weapon and tool control, particularly in wet or slick conditions. The adjustable hook-and-loop wrist strap functions as a retention system, keeping the glove correctly seated during physical confrontations to ensure the protective liner remains in position throughout the deployment.

Operators must understand the capability boundaries of this equipment before fielding it. These gloves provide slash and cut resistance, not puncture protection. Hypodermic needles, ice picks, and narrow piercing objects are not mitigated by the aramid liner. The gloves carry no thermal or impact ratings and will degrade under exposure to fuels, solvents, and harsh chemicals. Any significant chemical exposure requires immediate removal from service.

Readiness is maintained through a four-point pre-duty inspection conducted before every shift, covering visual integrity, liner condition, grip surface quality, and wrist closure function. Gloves that fail any inspection point are tagged unserviceable and replaced. Service life under regular duty use is six to twelve months, with immediate replacement required after any incident involving a confirmed cut to the glove.

Field Application Steps

1. PRE-DEPLOYMENT INSPECTION: Lay both gloves flat and examine the full exterior, including palm, backhand, fingers, and seams, for cuts, tears, holes, or abrasion damage. Turn gloves inside out where possible to verify the aramid inner liner is intact, fully stitched, and not bunched or pulled away from its seams.

2. GRIP AND CLOSURE VERIFICATION: Inspect the non-skid synthetic leather palm for peeling, smooth wear, or contamination that would reduce friction and compromise tool or weapon control. Test the hook-and-loop wrist strap by closing it fully and pulling firmly to confirm it holds secure under tension.

3. DONNING AND FIT CONFIRMATION: Slide each hand fully into the glove, ensuring all fingers are completely seated and the internal liner is flat and correctly positioned with no twisting. Secure the wrist strap snug enough to prevent removal during a struggle, while confirming circulation and wrist movement are not restricted.

4. FUNCTION CHECK: Make a full fist and extend fingers several times to verify unrestricted range of motion. Conduct a simulated equipment check by drawing your primary weapon, operating your radio, and manipulating handcuffs to confirm the gloves do not degrade proficiency on critical tasks.

5. SEARCH AND HANDLING PROTOCOL: During pat-downs and subject searches, use the flat palms of the gloved hands rather than probing with fingertips. When handling sharp debris such as broken glass or jagged metal, use sweeping palm motions rather than grasping small fragments directly.

6. METHODICAL SEARCH DISCIPLINE: Maintain a deliberate, unhurried search technique throughout the operation. These gloves are a mitigation tool against slash hazards, not an invulnerability shield. Situational awareness and sound search protocol remain the primary protection layer at all times.

7. POST-OPERATION DOFFING (CONTAMINATED): If gloves have contacted bodily fluids, grasp the exterior of one glove at the wrist cuff using the other gloved hand and peel it off inside out. Ball the removed glove into the palm of the remaining gloved hand, then slide two fingers from the bare hand under the wrist cuff of the second glove and peel it off over the first. Dispose of both per agency biohazard protocol.

8. CLEANING AND STORAGE: Hand wash gloves using mild soap and cool water, working out contaminants gently before rinsing thoroughly. Air dry at room temperature only. Do not use machine dryers, radiators, or any direct heat source, as heat will damage synthetic materials and may weaken the aramid fiber lining.
