Quick Overview

The Rothco Swiss Style Wool Blanket is a field-ready passive thermal regulation tool used by operators, emergency responders, and prepared civilians to prevent hypothermia during vehicle breakdowns, overnight field deployments, and casualty care situations.

The blanket's 55% wool and 45% synthetic construction delivers reliable insulation capability across a range of field conditions. Wool retains up to 80% of its insulating value when damp, making it a dependable option in environments where down and synthetic-only insulators fail. The 60" x 80" dimension supports full single-person enclosure using the standard wrap protocol, doubles as a ground pad when folded, and is compatible with US military-style cots. The synthetic blend component reduces overall weight and improves drying time compared to 100% wool construction, though it requires distance from open flames and embers due to melt risk.

Deployment of this blanket follows a three-phase protocol. Phase 1 addresses site selection and ground barrier establishment to mitigate conductive heat loss. Phase 2 executes the single-person wrap, layering the blanket as the outermost insulation layer over all available clothing. Phase 3 applies the blanket as a shelter augmentation component, functioning as a windbreak, door flap, or vehicle thermal barrier depending on the situation.

Operators must understand the scope limitation of this equipment. The blanket slows heat loss but does not generate heat. In sub-freezing, high-wind, or precipitation-heavy conditions, it is insufficient as a standalone survival system and must be integrated with proper clothing layers, shelter, and an available external heat source.

Field Application Steps

1. CONDUCT PRE-DEPLOYMENT INSPECTION: Visually check the blanket for holes, tears, thinning material, pest damage, or mold before relying on it in the field. A musty smell indicates mildew from improper storage and may indicate compromised capability.

2. ASSESS AND SELECT YOUR SITE: Remain inside the vehicle if it provides wind and precipitation protection. If you must exit, identify natural cover such as a rock outcropping, dense tree cluster, or low ditch before deploying the blanket.

3. ESTABLISH A GROUND BARRIER: Address conductive heat loss before wrapping. Use pine needles, dry leaves, or vehicle floor mats to create a mattress layer beneath you. The blanket can be folded in half for use as a ground pad, but this eliminates its function as a body wrap.

4. LAYER ALL AVAILABLE CLOTHING: Put on every piece of clothing available before deploying the blanket. The blanket serves as the final, outermost layer in the insulation system, not a replacement for clothing layers.

5. EXECUTE THE SINGLE-PERSON WRAP: Sit on one edge of the blanket. Pull the long side over your body and tuck it snugly underneath you. Pull the bottom edge up over your feet and tuck it in. Pull the remaining side flap over your body to create a complete seal, eliminating all air gaps.

6. SECURE THE HEAD AND NECK: Pull the top portion of the blanket over your head and neck like a hood to minimize heat loss from those areas. Keep your mouth and nose fully unobstructed at all times. Verify airway clearance frequently, especially as drowsiness sets in.

7. ASSUME A HEAT-CONSERVING POSITION: Curl into a fetal position or draw your limbs close to your body to reduce exposed surface area and slow heat loss.

8. AUGMENT YOUR SHELTER IF NEEDED: In a vehicle, drape the blanket over a window to block wind or create a thermal barrier between compartments. In an improvised field shelter, use it as a door flap for a debris hut or as a lean-to roof to trap warmer air. Orient the red stripe outward toward your position for identification by friendly personnel or rescue personnel.

9. CONDUCT FIELD CLEANING AND PROPER STOWAGE: After use, vigorously shake out all debris and air dry the blanket completely before stowing. For field packing, execute a ranger roll by folding in thirds lengthwise and rolling tightly from one end. Store inside a waterproof bag or liner to protect against moisture and pests.
