Quick Overview

The Rothco Tactical Shotgun Scabbard is a MOLLE-compatible transport system designed for operators, law enforcement personnel, and field users who require secure, hands-free carriage of a shotgun during tactical movement, vehicle transport, or range operations.

The scabbard integrates with PALS webbing via a four-strap MOLLE system, enabling mounting to assault packs, plate carriers, or tactical vests without sacrificing access to magazines, radios, or medical equipment. The 600D polyester shell resists abrasion and moisture, while semi-rigid internal padding protects the firearm's finish, sights, and optics during dynamic movement. A metal-reinforced bottom drainage grommet prevents moisture accumulation and potential weapon corrosion in wet field conditions.

Weapon sizing is managed through an adjustable foldable tip that shortens overall scabbard length to eliminate internal movement for barrels shorter than the maximum 29-inch capacity. The system accepts shotguns muzzle-end first, with the pistol grip or stock remaining accessible at the top for deployment. For standalone transport, a detachable 2-inch padded shoulder strap attaches via two metal D-rings and adjusts for crossbody or over-the-shoulder carry.

This system is a transport and carriage accessory, not a combat holster. It provides no active trigger guard protection and no locking capability, placing full responsibility for weapon condition and positive control on the operator. Secondary retention, such as a grip strap or lanyard attached to a D-ring, is required for high-angle operations, airborne insertion, or extremely dense terrain to prevent weapon loss.

Field Application Steps

1. CLEAR AND VERIFY WEAPON CONDITION: Confirm the firearm is unloaded, the chamber is empty, and the safety is engaged in accordance with your unit or agency protocol before any handling or insertion.

2. PERFORM INITIAL INSERTION FOR FIT ASSESSMENT: Insert the shotgun muzzle-end first into the scabbard until fully seated, then evaluate fit by checking for excess space at the bottom and confirming the pistol grip or stock is accessible at the top opening.

3. ADJUST SCABBARD LENGTH IF REQUIRED: Remove the firearm, fold the bottom tip of the scabbard upward to eliminate excess internal space, and secure the folded portion using the integrated closure system before re-inserting the cleared firearm.

4. CONFIRM FINAL FIT: Re-insert the cleared firearm and verify the fit is snug with no rattling or shifting, and that the pistol grip or stock remains accessible for a clean draw stroke.

5. SELECT AND EXECUTE CARRY METHOD (MOLLE): For MOLLE attachment, identify a mounting location on PALS webbing that does not obstruct access to magazines, radio, or IFAK, then weave each of the four reinforced straps alternately through the PALS loops on the platform and the corresponding loops on the scabbard.

6. SECURE AND STRESS TEST MOLLE ATTACHMENT: Close the terminal snap on each of the four MOLLE straps, then vigorously pull and shake the scabbard to verify zero shift. Re-check and re-weave any strap showing play before operational deployment.

7. SELECT AND EXECUTE CARRY METHOD (SHOULDER STRAP): For standalone transport, secure the metal clips on each end of the detachable shoulder strap to the two metal D-rings on the scabbard, adjust strap length for crossbody or over-the-shoulder carry, and position the floating pad at the point of shoulder contact.

8. EXECUTE WEAPON DEPLOYMENT: Reach back or to the side to establish a positive, firm grip on the shotgun's pistol grip or stock, then draw the weapon upward and clear of the scabbard in a smooth, deliberate motion while maintaining continuous muzzle awareness and accountability of teammate positions throughout the draw stroke.

9. TRAIN THE DRAW STROKE EXTENSIVELY: Repetition with an unloaded firearm is mandatory before operational use. Drawing a long gun from a back-mounted or side-mounted position is not intuitive and requires dedicated practice to build the muscle memory necessary for safe and efficient deployment in dynamic environments.
