Quick Overview

The Rothco Waterproof Cold Weather Neoprene Gloves are personal protective equipment designed to preserve hand function and prevent cold-weather injuries for operators working in cold, wet, or windy field conditions requiring manual dexterity.

The glove system is built around a four-layer weatherproofing and thermal regulation stack. The outer neoprene shell sheds moisture and blocks wind convection as the first line of defense. An internal waterproof bladder provides a redundant barrier if the shell becomes saturated during prolonged exposure. Thermoblock insulation traps body heat to create a warm microclimate around the hand, while the innermost fleece lining wicks sweat away from the skin to prevent evaporative cooling.

Grip and securement capability is maintained through an embossed synthetic rubber palm covering all finger and palm contact surfaces. The textured pattern channels water away to maintain a non-slip interface with tools and equipment on wet or icy surfaces. A two-stage wrist closure system, consisting of an elastic cuff and a hook-and-loop wrist strap, seals the glove against snow, water ingress, and cold air when properly integrated over the jacket sleeve.

Authorized deployment contexts include general field operations, vehicle recovery and maintenance, winter work details, surface-level maritime tasks such as ice fishing and water rescue, and general preparedness use. These gloves are rated for cold-weather environments, not extreme arctic conditions, and are not designed for prolonged full submersion or tasks requiring fine motor precision.

Field Application Steps

1. PRE-MISSION INSPECTION: Conduct a visual and tactile inspection of the neoprene shell, seams, palm surface, and hook-and-loop closure. Actuate the wrist strap multiple times to confirm it provides a strong, positive lock free of debris.

2. INSPECT THE INTERIOR: Turn the glove inside out or manually feel the interior lining. Confirm the fleece lining is dry and free of debris before donning.

3. DON THE GLOVES: Insert each hand fully, ensuring all fingers are completely seated in their respective positions. Fit must be snug but not constrictive, as unrestricted blood flow is essential for thermal performance.

4. INTEGRATE WITH OUTERWEAR: Pull the jacket sleeve over the elastic cuff of each glove. This shingled layering ensures moisture runs down the jacket and off the glove rather than into the cuff opening.

5. SECURE THE WRIST SEAL: Pull the hook-and-loop wrist strap firmly across the wrist and secure it over the jacket sleeve. Tighten enough to block drafts and wind, but not so tight as to restrict circulation.

6. CONFIRM FUNCTION: Make a fist with each hand and cycle through full finger movement. Grip your primary tool, such as a shovel handle, winch remote, or chain, to verify sufficient grip and dexterity before commencing operations.

7. MONITOR THERMAL STATUS DURING DEPLOYMENT: Periodically check for numbness, tingling, or color changes in the skin, which may indicate restricted circulation from an over-tightened strap or the onset of frostnip. Adjust the wrist strap fit as needed.

8. DOFF: RELEASE THE CLOSURE: Fully release the hook-and-loop wrist strap on both gloves before attempting removal. Do not attempt to pull the glove off with the strap engaged.

9. DOFF: REMOVE THE FIRST GLOVE: Grasp the fingertips of one glove with the other gloved hand and pull it off carefully, keeping the exterior surface facing outward.

10. DOFF: REMOVE THE SECOND GLOVE: Use your now-bare hand to remove the second glove from the inside, avoiding contact between the bare hand and the exterior surface. This protects the interior fleece lining from external moisture and contamination.

11. POST-MISSION SUSTAINMENT: Hand wash with mild soap and cold water only. Do not use bleach, harsh detergents, a machine dryer, or direct heat sources, as these degrade the neoprene shell and waterproof bladder. Hang by the cuffs in a well-ventilated area away from direct sunlight until completely dry inside and out before storage.

12. STORE CORRECTLY: Store in a cool, dry, dark location. Prolonged UV exposure causes the neoprene shell to become brittle over time, compromising both waterproofing and structural integrity.
