Quick Overview

The Rothco 70% Wool Blanket is a military-grade insulation tool used by operators, emergency responders, and prepared civilians to prevent hypothermia, manage cold-weather casualties, and construct expedient shelter in austere field conditions.

The blanket's 70% virgin wool composition is its primary operational advantage. Wool's crimped fiber structure traps dead air space to deliver reliable thermal insulation, and critically, it retains significant insulative value even when damp. This makes it a more dependable field asset than cotton or down in wet or humid environments where moisture exposure is unavoidable. The dense woven construction also blocks convective heat loss, functioning as a wind barrier when positioned as an outer layer.

In casualty management, the blanket serves as the primary wrap component in a hypothermia protocol. A hypothermic casualty is log-rolled onto the blanket placed on an insulated surface, then wrapped completely head to toe in a technique known as the hypo-wrap. This is a passive rewarming method only and does not replace the requirement for immediate medical evacuation. Rough handling of a hypothermic casualty must be avoided, as it can trigger cardiac arrest.

Operators should understand the blanket's defined limits. It is not waterproof, not fireproof, and not a standalone system for freezing or sub-freezing conditions. It is designed to supplement a rated sleep or survival system, or to provide emergency insulation for short durations. Proper storage in a waterproof bag, fully air-dried before packing, preserves readiness between deployments.

Field Application Steps

1. PRE-DEPLOYMENT INSPECTION: Inspect the entire blanket surface for holes, tears, or fraying edges. Check for signs of mold, mildew, or insect damage, particularly moth activity, before packing or deploying.

2. ISOLATE FROM CONDUCTIVE SURFACES: Identify primary heat loss points in your environment, including seat, floor, and windows. Place floor mats or packs beneath you if available, and use one blanket as a shared ground insulator for the team if blankets are limited.

3. CREATE A PERSONAL INSULATIVE SHELL: Ensure all clothing is dry before wrapping. Drape the blanket over your shoulders like a cloak, pull one side across the torso and tuck it under the body, then pull the top edge up and over the head and neck to cover the highest heat-loss areas on the body.

4. SECURE EXTREMITIES AND ASSUME HEAT-CONSERVING POSITION: Tuck the bottom edge of the blanket under your feet and legs to seal the insulative envelope. Assume a fetal position or knees-to-chest posture to reduce exposed surface area and preserve core temperature.

5. AUGMENT VEHICLE OR FIXED SHELTER: Identify draft sources within the shelter, including door seals and window gaps. Use a second blanket or excess material from the primary blanket to cover drafty areas and reduce convective heat loss within the enclosed space.

6. EXECUTE HYPOTHERMIC CASUALTY WRAP (PASSIVE REWARMING): Handle the casualty gently throughout this procedure, as rough movement can trigger cardiac arrest. Remove all wet clothing and replace with dry layers, then place the blanket flat on an insulated surface.

7. COMPLETE THE HYPO-WRAP: Log-roll the casualty onto the blanket and wrap completely from head to toe using the burrito technique. Layer a second blanket over the first if available. Initiate medical evacuation immediately, as this procedure is passive rewarming only and does not replace definitive care.

8. POST-DEPLOYMENT INSPECTION AND FIELD CLEANING: Inspect the blanket for burns, soiling, or embedded debris before stowing. Shake out vigorously to clear loose debris, spot clean with a damp cloth, and air dry completely before packing to prevent mildew.

9. STORE FOR NEXT DEPLOYMENT: Roll or fold the blanket tightly and store it inside a waterproof bag for vehicle or pack storage. For long-term storage, use a vacuum-sealed bag or airtight container with a moth deterrent such as cedar blocks, and confirm the blanket is fully dry before sealing.
