Quick Overview

The Rothco Wool Rescue Survival Blanket is a reusable 55% wool / 45% synthetic thermal protection tool used by field operators, vehicle emergency kit users, and emergency preparedness personnel to prevent hypothermia and manage cold exposure when professional medical assistance is unavailable.

The blanket's wool component provides the primary insulating capability through natural fiber crimp that traps body heat in air pockets. Its most operationally significant property is that it retains substantial insulating value even when damp, making it reliable in rain, snow, and high-humidity field conditions where a single-use mylar blanket would lose effectiveness. The 45% synthetic blend enhances tensile strength, abrasion resistance, and drying speed, adding durability for repeated deployment across multiple missions.

Beyond personal insulation, the blanket supports a range of secondary field applications. It can serve as a windbreak or lean-to shelter to reduce convective heat loss, a ground barrier to prevent conductive heat loss from cold surfaces, improvised padding or splint material, and a short-distance patient transport litter when multiple rescuers are present. The wool construction also provides natural fire retardancy, allowing the blanket to smother small nascent fires such as campfire embers.

Two field dimensions are available: the 60-by-80-inch configuration covers a single average-sized adult, while the 66-by-90-inch configuration enables a full mummy wrap, accommodates larger individuals, supports a two-person emergency huddle wrap, or provides a more substantial improvised shelter footprint. This blanket is best suited for vehicle, basecamp, and home emergency kits rather than ultralight man-portable configurations due to its weight and packed volume.

Field Application Steps

1. RETRIEVE AND PREPARE THE BLANKET: Remain inside the vehicle if it is safe to do so. Retrieve the blanket from your emergency kit, fully unpack it, and shake it out to remove any debris before deployment.

2. INSULATE FROM THE GROUND: If you must exit the vehicle, place a barrier between your body and the cold ground before sitting or lying down. Vehicle floor mats or seat cushions are effective conductive barriers in a field scenario.

3. EXECUTE THE BODY WRAP: Drape the blanket over your shoulders like a cape. Pull one side tightly across your body and tuck it underneath, then pull the other side over the top to create overlapping layers. Prioritize coverage of the head and neck, where heat loss is most significant.

4. SECURE THE WRAP AND MINIMIZE DRAFTS: Pull the bottom of the blanket up and tuck it firmly under your feet to create a sealed pocket. Remain still to conserve energy and allow body heat to build inside the wrap.

5. CONSTRUCT A WINDBREAK IF NEEDED: If exposure risk continues or shelter from wind is required, stake or tie the blanket between two trees or solid anchor points to create a vertical wind barrier that significantly reduces convective heat loss.

6. CONSTRUCT A LEAN-TO FOR OVERHEAD COVER: Using cordage, string a ridgeline between two anchor points at an appropriate height. Drape the blanket over the ridgeline and secure all four corners to the ground with stakes or heavy rocks to create an angled roof that deflects wind and precipitation.

7. MONITOR FOR SATURATION: Recognize that the blanket is not waterproof. In sustained heavy rain it will become saturated and heavier, with reduced thermal efficiency. If saturation occurs, wring out as much water as possible before re-wrapping or re-deploying.

8. POST-DEPLOYMENT CLEANING AND STORAGE: In the field, brush off dirt, mud, and vegetation and spot clean with a damp cloth. After return to base, hand wash or machine wash on a gentle wool cycle with cold water and mild detergent. Air dry only by laying flat or draping. Do not use bleach, fabric softeners, or a high-heat mechanical dryer, as these will shrink and damage the wool fibers. Store completely dry in a vacuum-sealed bag or heavy-duty plastic container in a dry, dark location.
