Quick Overview

The Smith & Wesson Model 300 is a professional-grade hinged handcuff designed for law enforcement, corrections, and security personnel who require maximum wrist control during high-risk arrest, transport, and detention operations.

The Model 300's primary tactical advantage over chain-link designs is its solid hinge, which locks both wrists in a fixed plane and severely limits the subject's ability to rotate their wrists, bring hands to a frontal position, or use cuffed hands as a weapon. The carbon steel single and double strand construction resists impact and torsion, while the heat-treated internal lockworks defeat picking, shimming, and brute-force tampering attempts. Dual-sided keyways allow the operator to disengage the lock regardless of cuff orientation, a critical capability during removal under pressure.

Proper deployment protocol requires staging the cuffs in the non-dominant hand before contact, applying each cuff to check a one-finger fit between the strand and wrist, and engaging the double lock on every application without exception. The double lock prevents the cuffs from ratcheting tighter after application, directly mitigating nerve damage, circulatory compromise, and the legal liability that follows improper restraint. Failure to engage the double lock is both an injury risk and an operational failure.

Readiness requires a pre-shift inspection covering visual integrity, ratchet function, hinge solidity, lock function on both keyways, and key condition. Lubrication should be applied quarterly in minimal amounts, and cuffs must never be stored in a double-locked state, as sustained spring tension degrades the lock mechanism over time. Any component failure removes the device from service immediately.

Field Application Steps

1. PRE-DEPLOYMENT STAGING: Remove the Model 300 from its pouch and hold it in your non-dominant hand with single strands facing outward and ready to swing freely. Orient the keyholes up and away from the subject's wrist to preserve access for post-application key use. Confirm your primary key is immediately accessible before initiating contact.

2. ESTABLISH SUBJECT CONTROL: Gain positive physical control of the subject's hands, securing one hand at a time and bringing it to the small of the back. Maintain that control throughout the entire application sequence without releasing pressure.

3. APPLY FIRST CUFF: Press the single strand firmly against the subject's wrist, allowing it to pivot through the double strand and engage the ratchet lock. Verify fit immediately by confirming you can insert the tip of your index finger between the cuff and the wrist. If the fit is too tight, loosen by one or two ratchet clicks using the key barrel.

4. APPLY SECOND CUFF: Bring the subject's second hand to meet the first per your agency's trained positioning standard, such as palms out or back-to-back. Apply the second cuff using the same technique and immediately check fit on both wrists before proceeding.

5. ENGAGE DOUBLE LOCK ON BOTH CUFFS: Insert the key pin into the double lock slot on each cuff and press firmly until you feel or hear a confirmed click. Verify engagement by attempting to tighten each cuff. Neither cuff should move. This step is mandatory on every application without exception.

6. CONDUCT POST-APPLICATION MONITORING: Perform a thorough search of the subject for weapons and contraband. During transport, monitor continuously for verbal complaints of wrist pain or numbness and conduct visual checks for hand discoloration, both of which indicate circulatory compromise requiring immediate cuff adjustment.
