The Ranger 2.0 is built for map-and-compass navigation where GPS is unavailable or unreliable. Its core capabilities include mirror-sighting for high-precision bearings on distant objects, a magnetic declination adjustment screw for automatic true north correction, and a liquid-filled housing with DryFlex rubber grip for positive control in all weather conditions. The degree dial is marked in 2-degree increments across a full 360-degree azimuth ring, delivering a rated accuracy of plus or minus 1 degree. Operators must account for magnetic interference from vehicles, power lines, and electronics, maintaining minimum safe standoff distances for valid readings.

The integrated clinometer enables preliminary slope angle assessment by turning the compass on its long edge and sighting across the baseplate top edge while reading the weighted pendulum needle against the internal scale. Field Application Steps

1. OBTAIN AND SET MAGNETIC DECLINATION: Determine the correct magnetic declination for your area of operations from a current topographic map or verified source. Use the metal key on the lanyard to engage the adjustment screw on the housing and rotate until the declination scale reflects the correct local offset, such as 10 degrees East.

2. CONFIRM DECLINATION LOCK: Verify the setting is fixed by checking the orienting arrow against the declination scale. All subsequent bearings taken in this configuration are automatically corrected to true north, eliminating the need for manual calculation when aligning to map grid lines.

3. ACQUIRE TARGET WITH MIRROR SIGHTING: Hold the compass level at eye height with the mirror lid open and adjusted to approximately 45 degrees. Position the compass until you can see both the compass housing in the mirror reflection and the distant target over the top of the mirror lid.

4. ALIGN DIRECTION OF TRAVEL ARROW: Point the Direction of Travel Arrow directly at the target, such as a radio tower or terrain feature on the distant ridge.

5. FINE-ALIGN USING SIGHTING HOLE: Look through the sighting hole in the mirror lid and center the vertical sighting line precisely on the target. Maintain this alignment throughout the bearing-setting process.

6. SET BEARING USING RED IN THE SHED: While holding target alignment, observe the mirror reflection and rotate the bezel only, not the compass body, until the red orienting arrow is perfectly aligned with the red end of the magnetic needle.

7. READ AND ANNOUNCE BEARING: Read the number on the degree dial aligned with the fixed index line. This is your bearing. Announce it clearly to your team using phonetic format, for example: "Bearing is two-seven-four degrees."

8. POSITION COMPASS FOR SLOPE MEASUREMENT: Turn the compass onto its long edge and hold it at eye level with the baseplate parallel to the slope face you are assessing.

9. SIGHT ALONG BASEPLATE TOP EDGE: Look across the top edge of the baseplate and align it with the crest or base of the slope, keeping the baseplate parallel to the slope gradient throughout the read.

10. READ CLINOMETER ANGLE: Allow the weighted clinometer pendulum needle to settle fully, then read the slope angle from the clinometer scale inside the housing.

11. CROSS-REFERENCE SLOPE CARD: Compare the clinometer reading against the slope angle card to contextualize the angle and evaluate implications for avalanche exposure or travel difficulty. Treat this as one data point within a broader terrain assessment, not a standalone decision tool.
