The 3H operates across an operational temperature range of -50°F to +150°F and delivers reliable directional readings through a copper induction dampening system that stabilizes the floating dial without liquid, eliminating freeze-up and bubble failure in extreme conditions. The dial presents both a 360-degree degree scale and a 6400-mil scale on a jeweled pivot, allowing the operator to read azimuths in either format depending on mission requirements. Seven tritium micro-lights provide self-luminous capability at the front sight, rear sight, and four cardinal points, enabling full sighting and dial reading with zero external light source.

Azimuth acquisition is achieved through either the Compass-to-Cheek method for precision sighting or the Center-Hold method for daytime movement. The bezel ring clicks at 3-degree intervals, allowing the operator to preset a known azimuth by count in complete darkness without requiring any light discipline compromise. Back azimuth calculation requires either subtracting 180 degrees from any azimuth above 180 degrees, or adding 180 degrees to any azimuth below 180 degrees, providing an immediate return bearing to the point of origin.

Readiness protocol requires verification that the dial floats and settles on north consistently, that all seven tritium sources are illuminated, and that the bezel ring produces an audible click at every 3-degree interval. The compass must be kept a minimum of 0.5 meters from personal electronics and rifles, and 55 meters from high-tension power lines, to prevent magnetic interference from corrupting readings.

Field Application Steps

1. CONDUCT PRE-DEPLOYMENT INSPECTION: Hold the compass level and confirm the floating dial moves freely without sticking, then verify it settles on north reliably across multiple rotations. In darkness, confirm all seven tritium sources are glowing at the front sight, rear sight, and four cardinal points.

2. OPEN AND GRIP THE COMPASS: Open the lid perpendicular at 90 degrees to the base so the rear sight clicks into its 45-degree locked position. Insert your thumb through the loop, place your index finger along the side of the compass body, and curl your remaining fingers around the base.

3. ACQUIRE YOUR AZIMUTH USING COMPASS-TO-CHEEK (PRIMARY METHOD): Raise the compass until the rear sight assembly rests against your cheekbone or eyebrow ridge at your dominant eye. Look through the peephole and align the front sight wire on a distant terrain feature, then glance down through the magnifying lens and read the value under the fixed black index line.

4. FOLLOW A KNOWN AZIMUTH DURING DAYLIGHT: Hold the compass level in front of you using the Center-Hold method. Rotate the compass body until your desired azimuth aligns under the fixed black index line, then turn your body and compass together as a single unit until the north-seeking arrow points to north. Select a forward landmark along the front sight wire, move to it, and repeat the process.

5. SET THE BEZEL AND FOLLOW A KNOWN AZIMUTH AT NIGHT: In shielded light, rotate the bezel ring until the known azimuth aligns with the fixed black index line. If no light source is available, count clicks from a known cardinal point, with each click equal to 3 degrees.

6. EXECUTE NIGHT MOVEMENT USING TRITIUM ALIGNMENT: Hold the compass level and turn your body until the illuminated north-seeking arrow aligns under the bezel's primary illuminated marking. Align the three illuminated tritium dots, one at the front sight and two at the rear sight, and move in the direction they indicate.

7. CALCULATE BACK AZIMUTH FOR RETURN NAVIGATION: If your forward azimuth is greater than 180 degrees, subtract 180 degrees to obtain your return bearing. If your forward azimuth is less than 180 degrees, add 180 degrees. Example: a forward azimuth of 274 degrees produces a back azimuth of 094 degrees.

8. MAINTAIN MINIMUM SAFE DISTANCES FROM INTERFERENCE SOURCES: Keep the compass at least 55 meters from high-tension power lines, 18 meters from vehicles or heavy machinery, 10 meters from field wire or telephone lines, and 0.5 meters from your rifle, steel helmet, or any personal electronics during use.

9. STORE AND SUSTAIN THE COMPASS AFTER USE: Store the compass in the closed position inside its nylon pouch, away from strong magnets, speakers, and electrical motors. Clean exterior surfaces with a soft damp cloth only, and use a soft brush to clear debris from hinge mechanisms and the bezel ring. Do not use abrasive cloths or chemical solvents.
