Quick Overview

The Potable Aqua P.A. Plus Water Treatment System is a two-stage chemical water purification protocol that enables individual operators and small teams to render biologically contaminated water safe for consumption when filtration and boiling are unavailable.

The system operates in two sequential stages. Stage 1 deploys Potable Aqua Germicidal Tablets, identified by a white cap, containing Tetraglycine Hydroperiodide as the active ingredient. Upon dissolution, each tablet releases a controlled iodine dose that penetrates microbial cell walls and disrupts metabolic function. Two tablets per quart is the mandatory dosage, and a 30-minute contact time is required for effective disinfection. In cold water below 40 degrees Fahrenheit, that contact time extends to 60 minutes.

Stage 2 deploys P.A. Plus Neutralizing Tablets, identified by a yellow cap, containing ascorbic acid. These are added only after the full Stage 1 contact time has elapsed. The ascorbic acid neutralizes residual iodine, eliminating the characteristic brown color and metallic taste that reduce hydration compliance in field conditions. This stage requires an additional 3 to 5 minutes before the water is ready for consumption.

The system treats bacteria, viruses, and Giardia lamblia cysts but is not effective against Cryptosporidium, chemical pollutants, heavy metals, or radiological contaminants. One complete kit treats 25 quarts of water, making logistics planning and tablet consumption tracking essential for multi-day operations.

Field Application Steps

1. SELECT YOUR WATER SOURCE: Identify the clearest, coolest, and most aerated source available. Avoid stagnant pools and water with surface scum, heavy discoloration, or visible contamination.

2. FILL YOUR CONTAINER: Fill a 1-quart or 1-liter canteen, leaving a small air gap at the top to allow for effective shaking and tablet distribution.

3. PRE-FILTER TURBID WATER: If the water is cloudy or contains suspended particles, pass it through a dense cloth such as a bandana or t-shirt before proceeding. Suspended particles can shield microorganisms from iodine contact and compromise disinfection.

4. DEPLOY STAGE 1 TABLETS (WHITE CAP): Open the white-capped bottle of Potable Aqua Germicidal Tablets and add two tablets to the 1-quart container. Cap the canteen and agitate vigorously for at least 60 seconds to fully dissolve the tablets and distribute the iodine solution.

5. DECONTAMINATE THE THREADS: Loosen the cap slightly and invert the canteen so that treated water flows over the cap threads. Retighten before proceeding.

6. WAIT THE FULL STAGE 1 CONTACT TIME: Allow a minimum of 30 minutes for disinfection. If water temperature is below 40 degrees Fahrenheit or the water has any remaining turbidity, extend the contact time to 60 minutes. Do not advance to Stage 2 early.

7. DEPLOY STAGE 2 TABLETS (YELLOW CAP): After the full Stage 1 contact time has elapsed, open the yellow-capped bottle of P.A. Plus Neutralizing Tablets and add two tablets to the treated water. Cap and agitate until tablets are fully dissolved. The water will visibly clear from its brownish iodine tint.

8. WAIT THE FINAL REACTION TIME: Allow 3 to 5 minutes for the neutralization process to complete. The iodine taste and color will be gone when the process is finished.

9. CONFIRM READINESS AND CONSUME: The water is now bacteriologically suitable for drinking. Hydrate and continue mission.
