Quick Overview

The Elite First Aid 12x30 Multi-Trauma Dressing is a sterile, highly absorbent secondary dressing used by trained medical, EMS, and first responder personnel to manage large surface area wounds after primary hemorrhage control has been established.

This dressing is designed to absorb, cover, and protect, not to stop life-threatening bleeding. It contains no hemostatic agents and no integrated pressure mechanism. Its deployment is appropriate for extensive abrasions, degloving injuries, large lacerations, burn coverage, secondary absorption over packed wounds, abdominal evisceration coverage, and improvised splint padding. Operators must confirm that all catastrophic bleeding is controlled before application.

The dressing consists of four components working in sequence: an individually sealed sterile wrapper with tear notches for gloved-hand access, a soft non-woven wound-contact layer that resists tissue adhesion, an absorbent inner fill that disperses fluid horizontally to prevent strike-through, and an outer protective layer that barriers against environmental contamination. This layered construction maintains a cleaner wound environment during extended field transport.

Readiness protocol requires inspection at the beginning of each shift and after any call where the medical kit was accessed. Operators must verify packaging integrity and expiration date, store the dressing away from moisture, extreme temperatures, and direct sunlight, and establish a clear PAR level to ensure immediate replacement after deployment. This is a single-use item and must be discarded as biohazardous waste following use.

Field Application Steps

1. CONFIRM SCENE SAFETY AND DON PPE: Verify the scene is safe before approaching the patient. Don nitrile gloves at minimum before any patient contact.

2. ESTABLISH AND CONFIRM HEMORRHAGE CONTROL: Expose the injury site completely and confirm all life-threatening bleeding has been controlled via tourniquet, direct pressure, wound packing, or other appropriate means. This dressing is applied only after catastrophic bleeding is stopped.

3. INSPECT THE STERILE WRAPPER: Check the packaging for tears, punctures, water damage, or expiration. Do not use a compromised package.

4. OPEN THE WRAPPER WITHOUT CONTAMINATING THE DRESSING: Open at the designated tear notches using gloved hands. Do not touch the sterile inner surfaces of the dressing.

5. UNFOLD AND ORIENT THE DRESSING: Unfold the dressing to its full 12-inch by 30-inch size. Identify the soft, non-woven facing, which is the wound-contact side.

6. APPLY THE DRESSING TO THE WOUND: Place the non-woven side directly onto the wound or over the primary dressing. Ensure the pad extends well beyond the injury margins on all sides to create a complete protective seal.

7. CONFORM THE DRESSING TO THE INJURY SITE: Lay the dressing flat over a torso wound or wrap it circumferentially around an injured extremity. Overlap multiple dressings if the wound area exceeds the coverage of a single pad.

8. SECURE THE DRESSING: Secure using elastic wrap, a pressure dressing, or medical tape. Apply firmly enough to prevent slippage without constricting circulation.

9. ASSESS DISTAL CIRCULATION: After securing, assess distal pulses and capillary refill on any affected extremity to confirm circulation is not compromised.

10. APPLY SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONS WHERE INDICATED: For abdominal evisceration, apply a moist dressing first if available and use this dressing as the dry outer layer. Do not push organs back into the abdominal cavity. For splint padding, wrap the dressing around the limb with focus on bony prominences before applying rigid splinting materials.

11. DOCUMENT AND MONITOR: Record the time of application and all interventions used. Monitor the patient continuously for signs of bleed-through, dressing displacement, or compromised circulation during transport.
