Quick Overview

A tactical thermal blanket is a passive warming and hypothermia prevention device used by military, EMS, fire-rescue, and search and rescue operators to manage heat loss in trauma casualties and individuals exposed to cold or wet field environments.

The Luminary Tactical Thermal Blanket is engineered with an aluminized silver interior that reflects up to 90% of radiant body heat back toward the casualty, making it a critical capability for shock management in the field. The non-stretch polyester construction is impermeable to wind and water, blocking both convective and evaporative heat loss from wet clothing or exposed skin. The olive drab exterior maintains low-visibility signature in woodland and temperate environments, preserving concealment in tactical and law enforcement deployments.

Correct deployment protocol requires the silver side to face inward toward the casualty, with the blanket tucked on all sides to create a sealed thermal envelope. Feet and head must be covered, as these areas represent significant points of heat loss. The airway must remain unobstructed at all times, and a face opening should be formed deliberately before securing the wrap. For severely hypothermic casualties, this blanket functions as a retention layer and must be supplemented with active warming measures such as heat packs per protocol, because it reflects existing body heat rather than generating new heat.

Each blanket is vacuum-sealed to approximately the size of a deck of cards and weighs 1.5 ounces, allowing multiple units to be staged in IFAKs, vehicle kits, or mass casualty bags without meaningful load penalty. This is a single-use disposable item. Once deployed on a casualty, it must be disposed of as medical waste and replaced before the kit is re-staged for the next operational period.

Field Application Steps

1. PREPARATION: Remove one blanket from its vacuum-sealed packaging. If available, position the casualty on a second blanket or insulated surface to prevent conductive heat loss to the ground.

2. UNFOLDING: Carefully unfold the blanket to its full 52" x 84" dimension. Move deliberately and avoid rapid or forceful movements, particularly in wind, as the material is thin and will tear under stress.

3. ORIENTATION: Confirm the silver aluminized surface is facing inward before draping. Silver side faces the casualty. This orientation is not optional. It is the functional mechanism of the blanket's thermal protection.

4. ENCASEMENT: Drape the blanket fully over the casualty and tuck all edges underneath the body on all sides to create a sealed thermal envelope. Ensure both feet and the head are covered, as these areas account for significant radiant heat loss.

5. AIRWAY MANAGEMENT: Form a deliberate opening around the casualty's face before securing the wrap. Never allow the material to contact or obstruct the mouth or nose. Maintain continuous visual monitoring of breathing and level of consciousness.

6. SECURING: Use medical tape or duct tape to seal edges, or tuck edges under the casualty's body weight to maintain the thermal seal. If the casualty is ambulatory, the blanket may be worn as a cloak to retain mobility.

7. IMPROVISED SHELTER RIGGING (if required): Select a site with a natural windbreak. To create tie-out points without tearing, wrap a small smooth stone into each corner of the blanket and tie cordage behind the stone to distribute tension. Rig corners to form a lean-to or A-frame configuration with silver side facing inward for warmth or outward to reflect solar radiation as a solar shield.

8. POST-USE REPLACEMENT: After any deployment on a casualty, dispose of the blanket as medical waste per your unit's protocol. Do not attempt to refold or re-stage a used blanket. Replace the consumed unit before the kit returns to a ready state.
