Quick Overview

Kemp USA Replacement Head Blocks are a professional-grade, paired foam cranial support component used by trained EMRs, lifeguards, and rescue personnel to restore full C-spine immobilization capability to a compatible Kemp USA spineboard when original blocks are damaged, contaminated, or missing.

These replacement head blocks are engineered exclusively for two compatible platforms: the Kemp USA EG Aquatic Spineboard (Item 10-982) and the Wood TG Spineboard (Item 10-981). They are not a standalone device and require the spineboard's existing head immobilizer base plate for proper deployment. Use on any other spineboard, even one that appears to fit, is contraindicated and creates risk of inadequate immobilization and patient harm.

The head blocks function as the lateral cranial support element of a three-point immobilization system. Constructed from high-density, non-absorbent coated foam, they prevent side-to-side and rotational movement of the head and neck during extrication, packaging, and transport. The forehead and chin straps integrate with the blocks to control anterior-posterior and vertical movement, completing a full cranial immobilization protocol.

Readiness sustainment for this equipment requires pre-shift inspection of structural integrity, surface coating, strap stitching, and hook-and-loop adhesion. Following each deployment, decontamination using hospital-grade CaviWipes or a 10:1 bleach-to-water solution is required. Components that fail inspection must be removed from service immediately, tagged unserviceable, and replaced before the spineboard is returned to a field-ready status.

Field Application Steps

1. CONFIRM COMPATIBILITY: Verify that the spineboard in use is a Kemp USA EG Aquatic Spineboard (10-982) or Wood TG Spineboard (10-981). Do not attempt to deploy these blocks on any other system regardless of apparent fit.

2. ESTABLISH MANUAL STABILIZATION: Assign a dedicated rescuer to maintain continuous manual in-line stabilization of the patient's head and neck. This duty is not relinquished until the full immobilization system is applied, tested, and verified.

3. POSITION THE HEAD BLOCKS: Slide each block into the corresponding channels or hook-and-loop strips on the spineboard base plate, placing one block on each side of the patient's head.

4. SET BLOCK POSITION: Slide both blocks inward until firm, uniform contact is made with the sides of the patient's head. Center each block over the ears and confirm no significant gaps exist between the block and the patient's cranium.

5. APPLY THE FOREHEAD STRAP: Secure the forehead strap across the patient's forehead just above the eyebrows. The strap must be snug but must not apply pressure to the orbits (eye sockets).

6. APPLY THE CHIN STRAP: Place the padded chin cup on the patient's chin and route the strap around the head blocks. The strap must be snug enough to prevent jaw opening but must not restrict breathing or obstruct the airway. Do not apply the chin strap if the patient is actively vomiting or has sustained significant jaw trauma.

7. CONDUCT FINAL ASSESSMENT: Verbally transfer control from manual stabilization to the immobilization device. Gently test the integrity of the immobilization, then re-check PMS (Pulse, Motor, Sensory) in all extremities. Monitor airway status and level of consciousness continuously throughout transport.
