Quick Overview

The Kemp USA 2-inch sterile conforming gauze roll is a secondary dressing retention bandage used by first responders, trained operators, and preparedness-minded civilians to secure primary wound dressings on small extremities, digits, and high-mobility joint areas.

This bandage is specifically engineered for anatomically challenging areas where standard dressings fail to stay in place, including fingers, toes, hands, feet, wrists, elbows, and pediatric limbs. Its knit stretch weave provides conformability, gentle compression, and self-adherence, allowing it to mold to body contours without slipping or gapping. The 2-inch width and 4.1-yard stretched length deliver sufficient material for multiple wraps on a hand, foot, or small limb. Ravel-free, non-linting edges prevent loose fiber contamination of the wound bed.

This device is classified as a basic first aid tool for dressing retention only. It does not contain a hemostatic agent and is not designed to control moderate to severe hemorrhage, pack deep wounds, or function as a tourniquet. Its application is appropriate for minor bleeding control via gentle pressure and for securing a primary dressing after hemorrhage has been controlled by other means. Sterility is guaranteed only while the individual wrapper remains intact and undamaged.

Proper deployment requires a pre-application packaging inspection, correct anchoring and wrapping technique, and an immediate post-application distal circulation assessment. The bandage must be snug enough to hold the dressing without creating a constricting band. Capillary refill time must return in under two seconds, and the patient must report no tingling or numbness before the procedure is considered complete.

Field Application Steps

1. CONFIRM SCENE SAFETY AND DON BSI: Secure the environment before initiating treatment. Put on appropriate body substance isolation gloves before handling any wound or dressing materials.

2. INSPECT PACKAGING: Examine the sterile wrapper for tears, punctures, or water damage. Verify the expiration date. Do not use the roll if the package is compromised or expired in any way.

3. PREPARE THE PATIENT: Instruct the patient to keep the injured hand or limb still. Confirm that the primary dressing, such as a sterile 4x4 gauze pad, is correctly positioned and covering the wound before opening the conforming gauze.

4. OPEN PACKAGING: Use the designated tear notches to open the wrapper. Do not allow the roll to contact any non-sterile surface, and maintain control of the free end, called the tail, throughout the application.

5. ANCHOR THE BANDAGE: Place the tail proximal to the primary dressing. Wrap twice in the same location to anchor the bandage and prevent slippage during subsequent passes.

6. SECURE THE DRESSING: Wrap distally using a Spiral Wrap with 50 to 75 percent overlap per pass, or use a Figure-Eight Wrap for high-mobility and joint areas. The Figure-Eight technique is preferred for the hand and wrist.

7. MAINTAIN PROPER TENSION: Apply the bandage snug but not tight. You must be able to slide one finger beneath the completed wrap. The goal is compression without constriction.

8. TERMINATE THE WRAP: Cut the bandage with trauma shears at the appropriate length. Secure the free end by tucking it under the previous layer or by fixing it with a small piece of medical tape.

9. ASSESS DISTAL CIRCULATION: Press the fingernail bed of the injured extremity until it blanches white, then release. Color must return in under two seconds. Also check for pulse, skin warmth, and normal skin color distally.

10. ASSESS NEUROLOGICAL FUNCTION: Ask the patient directly whether they feel any tingling or numbness in the fingers. Confirm motor function by instructing the patient to wiggle their fingers.

11. INSTRUCT THE PATIENT: Direct the patient to monitor for increased pain, swelling, numbness, tingling, or discoloration. Instruct them to loosen the bandage immediately if any of these signs appear and to seek further medical evaluation.
