Quick Overview

The Kemp USA Multi-Level Mortuary Cot is a professional-grade decedent transport platform engineered for dignified, safe, and efficient remains recovery, used by mortuary services personnel, coroners, and medical examiners in solo-operator field deployments.

The cot's core capability is built around its multi-level undercarriage mechanism, which raises and lowers the bed surface to match the height of any transfer surface, minimizing physical strain on a single operator. The anodized aluminum alloy frame is rated to 475 lbs and remains lightweight enough for one-person maneuverability through residential hallways, institutional corridors, and field recovery environments. Four 360-degree swivel casters with individual foot-actuated wheel locks provide controlled mobility and a stable transfer platform.

Operator readiness protocol requires engaging all four wheel locks before any decedent transfer or height adjustment. Failure to do so is classified as a critical safety violation, as uncontrolled cot movement can result in operator injury or loss of the decedent. Two adjustable restraint straps, positioned over the upper torso and legs, secure the decedent during transport and vehicle loading to prevent shifting on inclines or during vehicle acceleration.

Post-mission sustainment includes decontamination of all non-porous surfaces per agency biological materials protocol, followed by proper restowage in the vehicle's cot retention system. Weekly inspection covers the frame and welds, hardware integrity, adjustment mechanism function, caster condition, wheel lock engagement, and restraint strap serviceability. Equipment stored out-of-vehicle must be kept in a clean, dry area with no heavy loads stacked on the frame to preserve structural alignment.

Field Application Steps

1. UNLOAD AND STAGE THE COT: Remove the cot from the transport vehicle and position it on a level surface near the entry point of the recovery location. Perform a rapid function check by confirming wheels roll freely, wheel locks engage and disengage fully, and release levers actuate the undercarriage smoothly through its full range of motion.

2. TRANSPORT TO THE RECOVERY POINT: Navigate the cot to the point of decedent recovery using the four swivel casters to maneuver through hallways, doorways, and corners without lifting. Position the cot parallel and directly adjacent to the surface holding the decedent.

3. ENGAGE ALL FOUR WHEEL LOCKS: Depress each foot-actuated caster lever to engage all four wheel locks. Physically confirm the cot is fully immobile before any transfer activity begins. This is a mandatory critical action and cannot be skipped.

4. ADJUST COT HEIGHT TO MATCH TRANSFER SURFACE: Actuate the ergonomic release levers to lower the cot's bed surface to a position slightly below the height of the bed or surface holding the decedent. This height differential facilitates a controlled sliding transfer.

5. EXECUTE THE DECEDENT TRANSFER: Using agency-approved lifting and transfer techniques, such as a slide sheet, carefully transfer the decedent onto the cot surface. Ensure the decedent is centered on the bed surface before proceeding.

6. APPLY AND CONFIRM RESTRAINT STRAPS: Secure the first restraint strap over the upper torso and chest area at the designated frame attachment points. Secure the second strap over the legs and thigh area. Tighten both straps until snug and movement is prevented, without applying excessive constriction.

7. DISENGAGE WHEEL LOCKS AND EGRESS: Release all four wheel locks and carefully maneuver the cot out of the recovery location toward the transport vehicle. Navigate hallways and exits using the swivel casters.

8. POSITION FOR VEHICLE LOADING: Bring the cot to the rear of the transport vehicle and position it with the head-end wheels at the loading edge of the vehicle deck. Engage the wheel locks on the two head-end casters only to create a stable pivot point.

9. ALIGN COT HEIGHT TO VEHICLE DECK: Actuate the release levers to raise or lower the cot until the bed surface is level with the vehicle deck height.

10. LOAD THE COT INTO THE VEHICLE: Actuate the undercarriage release mechanism and guide the cot forward into the vehicle. The undercarriage is designed to collapse as it enters the vehicle. Push the cot fully forward until it engages the vehicle's internal cot retention and locking system.

11. VERIFY LOCK ENGAGEMENT AND SECURE: Physically confirm the cot is locked in place within the vehicle before closing the vehicle doors. Visual confirmation alone is insufficient. Apply a direct physical check.

12. COMPLETE POST-MISSION DECONTAMINATION AND RESTOWAGE: After the mission, decontaminate all surfaces per agency protocol for biological materials. Confirm the cot is clean, dry, and properly secured in the vehicle's retention system and ready for next deployment.
