Quick Overview

The Kemp USA 5" x 9" Sterile Combine ABD Pad is a high-capacity absorbent dressing used by trained responders to manage moderate to severe wound exudate and hemorrhage across large-surface injuries, surgical sites, and trauma scenarios requiring immediate hemorrhage containment.

The ABD pad functions as the primary absorption layer within a multi-component wound treatment system. Its fluffy cellulose inner fill rapidly wicks blood, plasma, and exudate away from the wound bed and disperses fluid throughout the pad, reducing maceration and extending dressing capacity. The soft non-woven outer cover is non-adherent, preventing enmeshment with healing tissue, sutures, or staples and enabling less traumatic dressing changes. Sealed edges prevent inner cellulose from linting into the wound and slow lateral strike-through onto clothing and equipment.

Authorized deployment roles include secondary dressing layered over wound packing gauze, primary dressing for large-surface injuries such as burns and eviscerations, pressure dressing under an elastic wrap for venous or capillary bleeding control, and post-surgical management of draining incisions. The pad's 5" x 9" dimensions provide full coverage of significant wounds with a single dressing. It is not a hemostatic agent, is not suitable for packing deep narrow wound tracts, and will not stop severe arterial hemorrhage, which requires tourniquet application and wound packing with appropriate gauze.

Sterility is guaranteed only when the peel-pouch is unopened and undamaged. Once opened, the pad must be used immediately or discarded. Staged pads require monthly or quarterly inspection for packaging integrity, moisture damage, and expiration date compliance, with stock rotated on a first-in, first-out basis.

Field Application Steps

1. SCENE SAFETY AND PPE: Confirm the scene is free of mechanical and environmental hazards before approaching the casualty. Don medical gloves at minimum before any patient contact.

2. EXPOSE AND ASSESS: Cut away clothing to fully expose the injury site. Visually inspect the wound to confirm the nature of bleeding, identify foreign bodies, and determine wound depth. Do not remove impaled objects.

3. PREPARE THE DRESSING: Locate one Kemp USA 5" x 9" ABD Pad and inspect the peel-pouch for tears, punctures, or moisture damage. If the packaging is compromised in any way, discard it and retrieve an undamaged unit.

4. OPEN ASEPTICALLY: Grasp the pouch at the pre-cut notch and peel open using a no-touch technique. Handle only the exterior of the pad. Do not allow gloves or any non-sterile surface to contact the white non-woven side that will face the wound.

5. APPLY THE DRESSING: Place the ABD pad directly over the saturated initial gauze layer. Center the pad on the wound with all borders extending well beyond the edges of the injury.

6. SECURE WITH PRESSURE WRAP: Apply a pressure dressing or elastic wrap starting distal to the injury and wrapping toward the torso. Wrap firmly enough to maintain direct pressure without occluding distal circulation. Check for a distal pulse immediately after securing.

7. MONITOR AND REASSESS: Monitor the outer surface for bleed-through and reassess the casualty's vital signs continuously. Watch for shock indicators including pale skin, rapid pulse, and altered mental status. If the pad becomes fully saturated, do not remove it. Apply a second pad directly on top and re-wrap.
