Quick Overview

A swimming pool and lifeguard first aid kit is a 141-piece, field-ready station designed for aquatic environment emergency response, enabling lifeguards and pool staff to manage minor-to-moderate injuries at the point of injury pending EMS arrival.

The kit is organized into six operational categories covering PPE and resuscitation support, wound cleaning and decontamination, wound and minor hemorrhage management, topical and environmental injury treatment, signaling and command, and ancillary reference tools. Its gasket-sealed steel case with double draw-bolt latches protects sterile components from the high-humidity, splash-prone, and chlorinated-air conditions inherent to aquatic environments. Components include medical grade vinyl gloves, antiseptic wipes, triple antibiotic ointment, woven patch bandages, butterfly wound closures, gauze rolls, and an ABD combine pad, all organized for rapid identification and deployment.

This kit functions as bridge care, providing immediate stabilization capability while awaiting higher-echelon EMS response. It is not a trauma kit and is not equipped to manage catastrophic hemorrhage, airway obstruction, major fractures, spinal injuries, or advanced cardiac events. EMS activation is required for any injury that exceeds the scope of basic first aid, and all personnel must operate within their current training and certification level.

Sustained operational readiness requires monthly inspection of the case seal, rubber gasket, draw-bolt latches, contents inventory, and expiration dates on antiseptic wipes, insect sting relief wipes, and triple antibiotic ointment. After every deployment, a full inventory and immediate restock to 100 percent readiness is mandatory, with a use log maintained to track items consumed and restock dates.

Field Application Steps

1. SIGNAL AND SECURE THE SCENE: Use the metal whistle with lanyard to signal staff assistance or clear the pool if necessary to control the scene. Approach the patient and visually confirm there are no ongoing hazards such as wet surface slip risks before proceeding.

2. DON PPE BEFORE CONTACT: Put on a pair of medical grade vinyl gloves before initiating any patient contact. Inspect gloves for tears prior to donning. Gloves are single-use and must be replaced if compromised.

3. ASSESS THE INJURY: Calmly communicate with the patient and parent or guardian if present. Visually inspect the affected area for foreign debris, significant bleeding, or obvious deformity before initiating wound care.

4. CLEAN THE WOUND: Using antiseptic wipes, clean the abrasion by wiping from the center of the wound outward. Use a fresh wipe for each pass to avoid recontaminating the wound and reduce bioburden.

5. APPLY ANTIBIOTIC OINTMENT: Apply a thin layer of triple antibiotic ointment over the cleaned wound surface to prevent infection and maintain a moist healing environment before bandaging.

6. DRESS THE WOUND: Select a woven patch bandage for the affected area. If bleeding persists or is moderate, place the ABD combine pad directly on the wound and secure it by wrapping with a gauze roll.

7. MANAGE SWELLING WITH THE INSTANT ICE PACK: Activate the instant ice pack by firmly squeezing it until the inner pouch ruptures, then shake to mix the contents. Wrap the cold pack in a towel or layer of gauze roll before placing it over the bandaged area. Never apply the cold pack directly to skin. Instruct the patient or guardian to apply it for no more than 15 to 20 minutes at a time.

8. CONDUCT AFTER-ACTION DISPOSAL: Properly dispose of used gloves, wipe packets, and bandage wrappers in a biohazard receptacle or designated trash container. Remove and replace any single-use components before closing the kit.

9. ADVISE AND DOCUMENT: Advise the patient or guardian to monitor the wound for signs of infection and to seek professional medical evaluation. Complete any required institutional incident report forms.

10. RESTOCK AND RESTORE READINESS: Immediately conduct a full inventory of the kit against the component list. Initiate restocking of all consumed items and return the kit to 100 percent operational readiness before the next deployment window.
