Quick Overview

A trauma backpack kit is a modular, high-visibility first aid system that enables designated first aid providers to deliver immediate on-site hemorrhage control, burn treatment, and casualty stabilization across worksites, school campuses, and public venues while bridging the gap until EMS arrives.

The First Aid Only Trauma Backpack Kit is organized into four self-contained treatment modules housed in a bright orange carrier: a Bleeding Control Pack for life-threatening hemorrhage, a Burn Care Pack for thermal injuries, an Eye Injury Pack for ocular trauma, and a First Aid Pack for minor wounds. The modular design is the operational core of the system. Rather than searching through a single disorganized bag under pressure, the provider deploys only the relevant module directly to the casualty, cutting response time when seconds determine outcomes.

Bleeding control capability centers on a windlass-style tourniquet, hemostatic gauze, chest seals, and an Israeli bandage. The tourniquet is applied high and tight on the affected extremity, and the application time is recorded in permanent marker on the strap, a critical data point for the EMS handoff. Hemostatic gauze extends the system's reach to junctional wounds where a tourniquet cannot be applied, including the groin, shoulder, and neck. An emergency blanket is included to counter the rapid drop in body temperature that accompanies significant blood loss.

Readiness is maintained through monthly inspections and a mandatory post-deployment serviceability check covering module presence, expiration dates, packaging integrity, hardware function, and tourniquet staging. A partially stocked kit is a failure point, and any kit from which items have been used must be logged as non-mission-capable until fully restocked.

Field Application Steps

1. CONFIRM SCENE SAFETY: Verify that all machinery is powered down and no secondary hazards are present before approaching any casualty. Do not enter the scene until it is confirmed safe.

2. DON NITRILE EXAM GLOVES: Put on nitrile exam gloves before making any patient contact to establish Body Substance Isolation. Use a fresh pair for each casualty to prevent cross-contamination.

3. CALL 911 AND TRIAGE: Direct a bystander to call 911 immediately so you remain focused on the casualties. Identify the most severe life-threatening injury first, prioritizing an arterial bleed over a burn and a burn over a minor abrasion.

4. DEPLOY THE BLEEDING CONTROL PACK: Remove Module 1 from the main compartment and bring it directly to the hemorrhage casualty. Use bandage shears to expose the wound by cutting away clothing.

5. APPLY THE TOURNIQUET: Position the tourniquet high and tight on the upper arm between the wound and the heart. Tighten the windlass until all bleeding stops, then secure it in place.

6. MARK THE APPLICATION TIME: Use the black marker to write the exact time of tourniquet application on the time strap. This information is critical for the EMS handoff and must not be skipped.

7. REASSESS BLEEDING CONTROL: Confirm that bleeding has stopped after tourniquet application. If bleeding continues, apply a second tourniquet directly above the first.

8. DELEGATE MINOR CASUALTY CARE: Instruct a capable bystander to apply direct pressure to any minor abrasions using supplies from Module 4, the First Aid Pack, so you can move to the next priority casualty.

9. DEPLOY THE BURN CARE PACK: Retrieve Module 2 and move to the burn casualty. Use shears to cut away clothing around the burned area. Do not pull away any fabric that is adhered to the skin.

10. APPLY AND SECURE THE BURN DRESSING: Select the appropriately sized burn dressing and apply it so the entire affected area is covered. Wrap loosely with a conforming gauze roll and do not apply constrictive pressure, as swelling is expected.

11. DEPLOY THE EMERGENCY BLANKET AND MONITOR: Retrieve the emergency blanket from the Bleeding Control Pack and cover the tourniquet casualty to prevent hypothermia. Continuously reassess all casualties for changes in consciousness, breathing, and bleeding status until EMS arrives.

12. EXECUTE EMS HANDOFF: Provide arriving EMS personnel with a concise report stating the number of casualties, injury types, the tourniquet application time and location, and the burn dressing coverage applied.
