The 385BK addresses a persistent operational problem: radio models vary between agencies, assignments, and personnel, yet mission-critical communication equipment must be secured reliably regardless of hardware. The case achieves this through a webbing chassis with adjustable Velcro girth straps and a vertical length strap that conform to the specific dimensions of any radio body. The retention system adds an elasticized bungee cord and Velcro top strap that actively prevents ejection during dynamic movement, jumping, or inversion, while still allowing access to top-mounted channel and volume controls.

The 385BK supports three distinct mounting configurations to match the deployment profile. Config Alpha uses the fixed rear belt loop for duty belt or hip carry. Config Bravo uses the two D-rings and the included 56-inch adjustable shoulder strap for cross-body or same-side carry. Config Charlie uses integrated rear vertical webbing to mount directly onto pack shoulder straps or web harness systems, the configuration designated for the SAR chest-mount scenario in this protocol.

Operators must account for the case's known limitations before deployment. The webbing material is not fire-resistant and must be worn under protective turnout gear in firefighting operations. The soft-sided construction provides abrasion protection but minimal defense against crushing forces or high-impact drops. Pre-deployment inspection of stitching, Velcro surfaces, bungee cord elasticity, and D-ring hardware is required before every operational period.

Field Application Steps

1. OPEN AND PREPARE THE CASE: Unfasten all adjustable Velcro girth straps and the vertical length strap fully before inserting any radio. This ensures the chassis is open wide enough to accept the radio without forcing it.

2. INSERT AND SEAT THE RADIO: Place the portable radio into the chassis and press it fully down until it is seated at the bottom of the case. An improperly seated radio will produce an inaccurate fitment when straps are tightened.

3. ADJUST GIRTH STRAPS FOR LATERAL FIT: Systematically tighten the horizontal Velcro girth straps around the radio body until all side-to-side play is eliminated. Verify that no side-mounted buttons, including PTT controls, are being continuously depressed by strap pressure.

4. ADJUST LENGTH STRAP FOR VERTICAL FIT: Tighten the vertical Velcro length strap so the top edge of the case sits below the radio's primary controls and antenna base. The radio body height and case height must correspond so controls remain accessible.

5. SECURE THE BUNGEE RETENTION CORD: Stretch the bungee retention cord over the top of the radio. On radios with prominent volume or channel knobs, seat the cord between them rather than across them.

6. FASTEN THE VELCRO RETENTION TAB: Press the Velcro tab attached to the bungee cord firmly onto its corresponding loop patch on the front face of the case. Ensure full surface contact across the tab.

7. PERFORM A POSITIVE RETENTION CHECK: Turn the case upside down and shake it moderately. The radio must not shift, loosen, or move. If any movement is detected, repeat Steps 5 and 6 before proceeding.

8. SELECT AND EXECUTE MOUNTING CONFIGURATION: Choose one of three authorized configurations based on mission requirements. For Config Alpha, thread the duty or pants belt through the fixed rear belt loop and position the case on the hip clear of other critical equipment. For Config Bravo, attach the included shoulder strap clips to both D-rings, adjust the 56-inch strap to the required carry length, and manage all excess strap length to eliminate snag hazard. For Config Charlie, identify the target vertical strap on the pack or harness, weave it through the rear vertical webbing of the case, and position the case high enough on the chest or shoulder for unobstructed control access without impeding vision or weapon manipulation.

9. CONDUCT ACTIVITY-BASED RETENTION RECHECKS: After any significant physical activity, including running, climbing, or crawling, stop and verify that radio retention remains secure before continuing operations. A lost radio constitutes a critical communications and accountability failure.
