Quick Overview

A workplace first aid kit is a curated set of wound care, topical treatment, and injury management supplies that enables trained personnel to deliver immediate point-of-injury care for common, non-life-threatening incidents in offices, job sites, contractor vehicles, and workshops.

The Urgent First Aid 10-Person Workplace Kit is designed to meet Federal OSHA §1910.151b requirements and addresses the most common workplace injury categories: minor lacerations and abrasions, minor burns and scalds, sprains and strains, skin irritations, and superficial foreign body removal. Its 6 component categories are organized by operational purpose for rapid identification during a response event. The kit is a Basic First Aid asset, not a trauma kit, and does not include tourniquets, chest seals, or hemostatic agents for managing massive hemorrhage or other life-threatening injuries.

Component selection reflects deliberate capability layering. Woven adhesive bandages handle high-motion areas while non-adherent pads protect burn tissue from disruption. Gauze wrap rolls enable pressure dressings for moderate bleeding, and burn cream packets provide antiseptic and analgesic coverage after proper cooling. Hydrocortisone cream addresses skin irritation, and the included instant cold compress supports swelling and pain management for sprains and contusions.

Sustained readiness requires consistent protocol. Inspections are conducted on the first working day of each month, covering physical case integrity, content inventory, expiration status within 30 days, and packaging integrity for all sterile items. Any component used must be replaced within one operational period to maintain full deployment capability.

Field Application Steps

1. SCENE ASSESSMENT AND SAFETY: Confirm the scene is safe before approaching the casualty. Identify and mitigate active hazards such as fluid spills or energized equipment, and don PPE or gloves sourced separately, as gloves are not included in this kit.

2. ACCESS THE CASUALTY AND RETRIEVE THE KIT: Move to the casualty or, if the casualty can move safely, direct them away from the hazard zone. Retrieve the Urgent First Aid kit from its wall-mount or vehicle storage location.

3. EXPOSE AND ASSESS THE WOUND: Use the included nickel-plated scissors to expose the injury if clothing obstructs the site. Visually inspect for wound depth, length, and rate of bleeding to confirm the injury is within the scope of this kit's capability.

4. CONTROL BLEEDING WITH DIRECT PRESSURE: Apply a sterile 3"x3" gauze dressing pad directly to the wound and maintain firm direct pressure until bleeding is controlled. Do not remove the pad if it saturates; add additional material on top and maintain pressure.

5. CLEAN THE WOUND PERIMETER: Once bleeding is controlled, use a BZK Antiseptic Cleansing Wipe to sanitize the intact skin surrounding the wound. Do not wipe inside the wound cavity, as these wipes are not indicated for deep wound irrigation.

6. APPLY A STERILE DRESSING: Place a fresh sterile gauze pad over the wound, or use a non-adherent pad if adherence to the wound surface is a concern, such as with burns or large abrasions. Non-adherent pads prevent disruption of healing tissue during dressing changes.

7. SECURE THE DRESSING: Use a 2-inch gauze wrap roll to secure the dressing firmly in place, particularly on extremities. Finish with first aid tape, which can be torn by hand, to lock the wrap and prevent displacement.

8. CHECK CIRCULATION DOWNSTREAM: After securing the dressing, check capillary refill distal to the bandage site to confirm the wrap is not applied too tightly. Loosen and reapply if circulation is compromised.

9. EXECUTE POST-ACTION PROCEDURES: Advise the casualty to report the injury to their supervisor and seek professional medical evaluation. Complete all required workplace incident reports and inventory the kit immediately to identify all consumed components and initiate restocking before the end of the shift.
