The Model 3H is built for operational readiness across the full spectrum of environmental conditions, functioning from -50°F to +150°F with waterproof and sand-proof construction. Its copper induction-damping ring settles the dial quickly without liquid, eliminating freeze and bubble failures common to liquid-filled compasses. Seven self-luminous tritium micro-lights provide constant illumination for over 12 years, enabling full night navigation capability without batteries or external power.

The compass supports two primary sighting protocols: the compass-to-cheek method for precise bearing acquisition, and the center-hold method for azimuth following during movement. The lensatic design allows the operator to simultaneously align the sighting wire on a distant object and read the magnetic bearing through the magnifying lens. The bezel ring ratchets every 3 degrees, enabling tactile azimuth setting and course correction in complete darkness without visual reference.

Effective deployment of this instrument requires proficiency in map reading, terrain association, and magnetic declination adjustment. The compass points to Magnetic North, not True North or Grid North, and failure to apply local declination will produce significant navigational error. Field Application Steps

1. PRE-OPERATIONAL INSPECTION: Before deployment, inspect the crystal, lens, and cover for cracks, and confirm the sighting wire is straight and undamaged. In a completely dark room, verify all seven tritium sources are glowing: one on the cover, two on the rear sight, and four on the dial.

2. DETERMINE AND APPLY MAGNETIC DECLINATION: Identify the magnetic declination for your area of operations before moving. Failure to apply local declination will produce significant navigational error, as this compass points to Magnetic North, not True North or Grid North.

3. OPEN AND SECURE THE COMPASS: Raise the cover to 90 degrees to expose the front sight assembly. Open the lens and rear sight bracket flat against the base for the compass-to-cheek method, or fully extend cover and base into a straight line for the center-hold method.

4. ASSUME THE CORRECT GRIP: Insert your thumb through the thumb loop. Support the front of the compass with your index finger and wrap remaining fingers around the base. Position the rear sight closest to your body.

5. ACQUIRE A BEARING USING COMPASS-TO-CHEEK METHOD: Raise the compass to eye level and bring the rear sight slot to your cheek. Align the sighting wire with your target object, then glance down through the magnifying lens and read the red degree number on the dial directly beneath the hairline. That number is your magnetic azimuth.

6. SET THE AZIMUTH ON THE BEZEL RING: Rotate the bezel ring until the black index line aligns with your desired azimuth on the dial. For night use without visual reference, count clicks from a known cardinal point: each click equals 3 degrees.

7. FOLLOW THE AZIMUTH USING CENTER-HOLD METHOD: Hold the compass level at mid-chest, centered on your body. Pivot your entire body, not just your arms, until the North-seeking arrow aligns directly under the bezel's black index line. The sighting wire now points along your intended azimuth.

8. IDENTIFY AN INTERIM LANDMARK AND MOVE: Identify a distinct object along your azimuth line and move to it. Upon arrival, re-acquire the azimuth and identify a new landmark. Repeat this process to maintain directional accuracy across distance.

9. CONDUCT NIGHT NAVIGATION: Use the compass-to-cheek method to align the front tritium dot between the two rear tritium vials onto your target landmark. Then shift to center-hold, turn your body until the glowing North arrow aligns under the bezel index, and select a visible silhouette landmark along your direction of travel.

10. MAINTAIN SAFE DISTANCES FROM MAGNETIC INTERFERENCE: Keep the compass more than 55 meters from high-tension power lines, more than 18 meters from vehicles and large metal structures, and more than 0.5 meters from rifles, electronics, and radio equipment. Readings taken inside these distances will not be reliable.
