Quick Overview

The Luminary Ultralight Water Storage and Purification Kit is a man-portable field system that enables individuals and small teams of up to four operators to collect, chemically treat, and store biologically safer drinking water for 24-hour hydration sustainment in austere or emergency environments where normal water infrastructure is compromised.

The kit includes four collapsible, BPA-free 4-liter water pouches with gusseted bases, integrated carry handles, and 1 3/8-inch screw-on caps, providing a full reserve capacity of 16 liters when all pouches are deployed. Each pouch rolls flat for minimal pack footprint and expands to stand unsupported on a level surface when filled, enabling hands-free filling in the field. A full pouch weighs approximately 8.8 lbs and seals watertight for transport. When not deployed for water operations, the pouches function as waterproof containers for dry goods such as grains, legumes, or powdered foods.

Purification is achieved using 20 Aquatabs tablets containing Sodium Dichloroisocyanurate, dosed at one tablet per liter of clear water. After tablets are added and the pouch is sealed, the operator agitates for 60 seconds to ensure uniform distribution, then allows a non-negotiable minimum contact time of 30 minutes before the water is considered treated. Tablets are sealed in foil strips to protect against moisture and UV degradation and must not be removed until immediate use.

Operators must understand the capability limitations of this system before deployment. Aquatabs are effective against most waterborne bacteria and viruses but are not effective against chemical contaminants, heavy metals, or radiological threats. Turbid water significantly reduces tablet efficacy and must be pre-filtered before treatment. For protozoan cysts such as Cryptosporidium, longer contact times are required, and boiling remains the most definitive purification protocol when conditions allow.

Field Application Steps

1. INSPECT THE POUCH: Remove one collapsible water pouch from its storage configuration and visually inspect the body and seams for punctures, tears, or material degradation. Confirm the cap threads are clean and undamaged before proceeding.

2. ASSESS WATER TURBIDITY: Before filling, evaluate the clarity of your water source. If the water is visibly cloudy or turbid, pre-filter it through a cloth or sediment filter before adding it to the pouch, as turbidity significantly reduces tablet efficacy.

3. FILL THE POUCH: Unscrew the cap and fill the pouch from the source until the water level is approximately 1 to 2 inches from the top. This headspace is required to allow for effective agitation during the purification phase.

4. REFERENCE DOSAGE AND DISPENSE TABLETS: Apply the standard dosage of one Aquatabs tablet per one liter of water. For a full 4-liter pouch, press out four tablets from the foil strip and drop them directly into the water, then immediately re-stow the remaining tablets in their foil packaging.

5. SEAL AND AGITATE: Secure the screw-on cap until tight. Gently invert and shake the sealed pouch for approximately 60 seconds to accelerate tablet dissolution and ensure uniform distribution of the purification agent throughout the water volume.

6. ESTABLISH CONTACT TIME: Place the sealed pouch upright on a stable surface and wait a minimum of 30 minutes before the water is considered treated. This contact time is non-negotiable and critical for pathogen neutralization.

7. LABEL THE POUCH: If multiple pouches are being treated simultaneously, mark each treated pouch with the time it will be ready for consumption. This prevents premature use before contact time is complete.

8. DISPENSE SAFELY: Pour treated water from the pouch into canteens, bottles, or cooking pots as needed. Avoid direct contact between the pouch opening and any potentially contaminated surface during dispensing.

9. REPEAT FOR FULL RESERVE: Repeat Steps 1 through 8 with the remaining three pouches to establish the full 16-liter treated reserve for your four-person team.

10. POST-USE CLEANING AND STORAGE: Rinse each empty pouch twice with clean water. For thorough cleaning, add a drop of non-scented dish soap, fill the pouch one-third full, seal, shake vigorously, and rinse until all soap residue is gone. Hang the pouch upside down with the cap removed until the interior is completely dry, then collapse flat, screw the cap on loosely, and store in a cool, dark, dry location.
