The MayDay Professional Rescue Kit "The Element" is a field-ready four-person light search and rescue system designed for CERT, SAR, and institutional Emergency Response Teams conducting initial scene access, minor debris removal, and victim location in the immediate aftermath of a disaster.

The Element equips an operator team with a complete equipment suite organized across five capability categories: personal protective equipment, forcible entry and debris removal tools, scene control and signaling, light and communication, and shelter and sustainment. PPE includes hard hats, eye goggles, leather and nitrile gloves, and ear loop coverings, with hard hats required at all times within the operational area. The kit is suited for collapsed wood-frame structures, tornado and hurricane debris fields, and post-earthquake reconnaissance operations.

Deployment follows a five-step sequential protocol: Arrival and Scene Assessment, PPE and Equipment Staging, Entry and Primary Search, Debris Management and Victim Access, and Scene Marking and Egress. The pulley and cord system provides a light-duty mechanical advantage capability for objects in the 200 to 300 pound range, with a safe working load not to exceed 100 pounds. Upon locating a victim, the team's scope of practice is limited to thermal management using solar and paramedic blankets, as the kit contains no medical treatment supplies.

Critical limitations define the boundaries of safe deployment. The kit is not rated for heavy structural collapse involving concrete or steel, confined space rescue, HAZMAT environments, high-angle rope rescue, or advanced trauma care. Ear loop coverings provide zero protection against asbestos, fine silica dust, chemical vapors, or airborne pathogens. Matches and candles must never be used in any structure until the absence of flammable vapors has been confirmed.

Field Application Steps

1. ARRIVAL AND SCENE ASSESSMENT: Unpack the roll bag in a safe staging area that is upwind and uphill of the incident. Establish team roles including Team Lead, Search, and Scribe, then activate the Dynamo Radio to monitor emergency broadcasts.

2. 360-DEGREE HAZARD ASSESSMENT: Conduct a full perimeter assessment before any team member approaches the structure. Identify all entry and egress points, visible hazards such as downed electrical lines or gas leak indicators, and probable victim locations.

3. DON FULL PPE: All four team members must put on hard hats, eye goggles, and leather gloves before entering the operational area. Nitrile gloves may be worn under leather gloves for layered fluid barrier protection.

4. STAGE AND ASSIGN EQUIPMENT: The Team Lead assigns tools based on the initial assessment findings. Stage the 24-inch pry bar and 18-inch bow camp saw for entry and clearing, and confirm each member is carrying a flashlight, light sticks, and a metal whistle.

5. EXECUTE ENTRY AND PRIMARY SEARCH: Attempt the simplest available entry point first, such as unlocked doors or broken windows, before applying the pry bar at lock or hinge points. Upon entry, announce "Search and Rescue!" audibly, then pause and listen for victim responses before proceeding.

6. CONDUCT SYSTEMATIC ROOM-TO-ROOM SEARCH: Search each room in sequence and mark cleared doors with a single green light stick. Mark doors with an "X" configuration if a hazard has been noted inside.

7. CLEAR DEBRIS AND ACCESS VICTIMS: Use the folding shovel, pry bar, and bow camp saw to remove light debris such as fallen ceiling tiles and furniture. For objects in the 200 to 300 pound range, rig the 440-pound-rated steel pulley and 1/4-inch by 50-foot cord to a structurally sound anchor, keeping the working load under 100 pounds.

8. STABILIZE LOCATED VICTIMS: Provide care within your scope of training only. Wrap victims in solar blankets or paramedic blankets to prevent heat loss and manage shock. This kit contains no medical treatment supplies.

9. SHUT OFF UTILITIES IF NEEDED: Use the 10-inch vise grip or slip joint pliers to shut off accessible gas or water valves if a leak is identified and the shut-off is safely reachable.

10. MARK HAZARDS AND EGRESS: Apply barricade tape to all identified hazards that cannot be immediately mitigated. Exit the structure and report all findings to command upon search completion.

11. CONDUCT PERSONNEL ACCOUNTABILITY REPORT (PAR): Account for all four team members by name before releasing the team or transitioning to standby. No team member is released from accountability until PAR is confirmed complete.

12. POST-DEPLOYMENT INSPECTION AND REPLENISHMENT: Immediately after mission completion, conduct a full kit inspection per the Section 5.2 checklist. Replace all consumed single-use items including light sticks, barricade tape, water purification tablets, and nitrile gloves, and restore the kit to 100 percent operational readiness within 24 hours.
