Quick Overview

The Rothco Convertible Medium Transport Pack is a 25-liter modular cargo system designed for tactical operators, first responders, and prepared civilians who require rapid transitions between backpack and sling carry modes during missions of up to 24 hours.

The pack's core capability is its two-mode carry system. In Backpack Mode, both shoulder straps distribute load ergonomically for stable movement over varied terrain. In Sling Mode, a single strap conversion zipper consolidates the straps into a crossbody carry, allowing the operator to rotate the pack to the chest for immediate, on-body equipment access without doffing. This transition protocol is optimized for environments requiring frequent movement between vehicle-borne and dismounted operations, or navigation through confined urban spaces.

The organizational system is built around deployment priorities. Front zippered pockets stage immediate-need items such as IFAKs, tourniquets, and navigation tools. The rear hook-and-loop compartment accepts either a hydration bladder or a compatible CCW holster. MOLLE/PALS webbing on the front and sides allows field-ready expansion with mission-specific pouches including radio, medical, and magazine configurations. Heavier items load closest to the back panel to maintain center of gravity and operator balance.

Readiness sustainment for this platform requires pre-deployment inspection of all buckles, zippers, stitching at shoulder strap anchor points, and MOLLE webbing integrity. The 600D polyester fabric is water-repellent, not waterproof, requiring moisture-sensitive equipment to be protected in waterproof cases. The conversion zipper is a critical mechanical component and must be kept clear of grit and debris to ensure reliable mode transitions in the field.

Field Application Steps

1. LOAD DISTRIBUTION: Pack heavier items closest to the back panel to maintain center of gravity and operator stability. Stage immediate-need items, such as your IFAK, tourniquet, and navigation tools, in the front exterior pockets for rapid access.

2. SYSTEM SETUP: For CCW carry, install a compatible hook-and-loop holster in the rear compartment and confirm a clean, repeatable draw path before deployment. For hydration, install the bladder in the rear compartment and route the drink tube through the top port over your preferred shoulder.

3. MOLLE INTEGRATION: Attach all required external pouches to the MOLLE/PALS webbing on the front and sides of the pack before donning. Confirm fit and accessibility of all attached pouches while the pack is on a flat surface.

4. INITIAL FIT IN BACKPACK MODE: Don the pack with both shoulder straps unzipped and separate. Adjust both straps for a snug, high-and-tight fit against the back panel before beginning movement.

5. TRANSITION TO SLING MODE, RELEASE ONE ARM: While standing, slip your non-dominant arm out of its shoulder strap. Keep your dominant arm engaged to maintain control of the pack throughout the transition.

6. TRANSITION TO SLING MODE, ROTATE AND COMBINE: Swing the pack around your body and under your dominant arm until it is positioned on your chest. Bring the free shoulder strap around to meet the strap still on your shoulder.

7. TRANSITION TO SLING MODE, ENGAGE ZIPPER: Align the conversion zipper and zip both straps together fully to form a single sling strap. Cinch the sling for a secure fit across your torso before accessing any equipment.

8. OPERATING IN SLING MODE: With the pack on your chest, all compartment zippers are oriented for direct, immediate access. Retrieve or stow equipment as the situation dictates, then rotate the pack back to your back. The sling configuration will keep it secured during movement.

9. REVERT TO BACKPACK MODE: Rotate the pack back around to your chest and fully unzip the sling strap to separate it into two individual shoulder straps. Slip your non-dominant arm back into its strap and adjust both straps to re-establish a stable two-shoulder carry before resuming dynamic movement.

10. PRE-DEPLOYMENT INSPECTION: Before each use, perform a full tactile and visual inspection of all buckles, zippers including the conversion zipper, fabric, MOLLE webbing, and stitching at the shoulder strap anchor points and carry handle. Any significant seam damage renders the pack non-mission capable until professionally repaired.
