Quick Overview

QuikClot Advanced Clotting Gauze is a kaolin-impregnated hemostatic dressing used by first responders, range safety personnel, and prepared civilians to control moderate to severe external hemorrhage when direct pressure alone fails to establish hemostasis.

The active component of QuikClot gauze is kaolin, a mineral that activates Factor XII in the intrinsic coagulation cascade upon contact with blood, accelerating stable clot formation without generating heat. The gauze is non-exothermic and contains no animal, human, or shellfish-derived proteins, which minimizes the risk of allergic reaction in field conditions. The 3-inch by 24-inch format is sized for significant lacerations, abrasions, and traumatic wounds in home, vehicle, outdoor recreation, and range safety contexts where a full combat roll would be excessive.

Correct deployment requires packing the gauze directly to the bleeding source at the base of the wound cavity, followed by a minimum of three minutes of firm, continuous, uninterrupted direct pressure. If bleeding continues after the initial pressure interval, a second unit is applied on top of the first and pressure is reapplied for three to five additional minutes. The gauze must not be removed in the field, as dislodging the clot will restart hemorrhage.

QuikClot gauze is a temporary field measure, not a definitive treatment. It is not a tourniquet substitute and is not sufficient for catastrophic arterial hemorrhage from a major vessel, which requires immediate tourniquet application as the primary intervention. All casualties treated with hemostatic gauze require evaluation by a qualified medical professional following field stabilization.

Field Application Steps

1. CONFIRM SCENE SAFETY: Ensure the environment is safe for both the responder and the patient before initiating care. Do not approach an unsecured scene.

2. DON PPE: Apply medical gloves before making contact with the patient to protect against bloodborne pathogen exposure. If gloves are unavailable, use the cleanest barrier available.

3. EXPOSE THE WOUND: Remove or cut away clothing and debris from the injury site. Visually identify the most significant bleeding point or points before proceeding.

4. INSPECT AND OPEN PACKAGING: Examine the foil pouch for tears, punctures, or seal failure before opening. If packaging integrity is compromised, discard the unit and use a replacement. Tear open at the pre-cut notches and remove the gauze without contacting dirty surfaces.

5. PACK OR PLACE THE GAUZE: For deep lacerations, pack the gauze firmly into the wound cavity, making direct contact with the bleeding source at the base first, then continue packing until the cavity is filled to the surface. For surface wounds, place the gauze directly over the bleeding area ensuring complete coverage. For epistaxis, roll or fold a small section and gently insert into the affected nostril without forcing it.

6. APPLY DIRECT PRESSURE: Use hands, a knee, or a firm object to apply firm, continuous, uninterrupted pressure over the packed gauze. Maintain pressure for a minimum of 3 minutes without interruption.

7. ASSESS FOR HEMORRHAGE CONTROL: Carefully release pressure to check bleeding status without removing the gauze. If bleeding continues, apply a second unit on top of the first and reapply pressure for 3 to 5 additional minutes.

8. SECURE THE DRESSING: Once hemostasis is achieved, secure the gauze in place using a pressure bandage, elastic wrap, or tape. Maintain adequate pressure while confirming distal circulation is not compromised.

9. DO NOT REMOVE THE GAUZE: Leave the QuikClot gauze in place and do not attempt field removal. Removing the gauze will dislodge the clot and restart hemorrhage. Removal must be performed by a medical professional.

10. EVACUATE FOR DEFINITIVE CARE: Transport the patient to professional medical evaluation immediately. QuikClot gauze is a temporary field measure only and does not substitute for definitive wound management.
