Quick Overview

The R&B Urban Rescue Backpack is a modular equipment carriage system used by technical rescue operators, flight medics, SAR teams, and tactical law enforcement personnel to transport and rapidly deploy mission-configured medical and rescue gear in high-demand environments.

The pack's core design advantage is its ability to be reconfigured based on mission-specific requirements. The hook-and-loop lined main compartment accepts modular pouches that can be arranged in C-A-B-C treatment priority order, allowing operators to build trauma, airway, or oxygen administration loadouts from a single platform. The clamshell opening with #10 YKK zippers allows the pack to lay completely flat, converting it into an organized on-scene workstation with simultaneous access to all contents. Closed-cell foam padding throughout the main body protects fragile equipment including portable monitors, glass drug vials, and oxygen regulators during rough transport.

A critical safety and logistics feature is the "false back" suspension stowage panel, a zippered rear compartment that accepts the fully retracted shoulder straps and waist belt. Stowing the suspension system is a mandatory protocol before helicopter operations, hoisting operations, and confined space entry, as exposed straps create a severe snag hazard around aircraft and rigging. When the suspension system is stowed, the pack converts to a streamlined, snag-free duffel configuration carried by the reinforced top grab handle.

The pack is available in three variants to match operational context: orange and navy models with 3M reflective trim and a Star of Life emblem for high-visibility field identification, and a tactical blackout model without reflective trim or identifying markers for covert law enforcement deployment.

Field Application Steps

1. OPEN AND LAY FLAT FOR LOADOUT: Open the main compartment using the full-perimeter clamshell zipper and lay the pack completely flat on a clean surface. This provides simultaneous access to all interior surfaces for systematic pre-mission configuration.

2. AFFIX MODULAR POUCHES IN PRIORITY ORDER: Attach pre-loaded modular pouches for bleeding control, airway management, and IV access to the hook-and-loop lined interior walls. Arrange them in C-A-B-C treatment priority order so that highest-priority interventions are accessible first.

3. SECURE THE OXYGEN CYLINDER: Place the oxygen cylinder into its dedicated interior sleeve and anchor it securely to the pack interior. A loose cylinder is a projectile and fire hazard and must not be transported unsecured under any circumstances.

4. STOCK THE AIRWAY ORGANIZER: Load primary and backup airway devices into the main flap's 18-inch slot pocket and six clear vinyl compartments. The clear vinyl allows rapid visual identification of ET tubes, laryngoscope blades, and adjunct airways without opening individual pockets.

5. STAGE IMMEDIATE-ACTION ITEMS IN EXTERIOR POCKETS: Place BSI gloves, tourniquets, and pressure dressings into the two removable exterior side pockets, each measuring 5 inches by 11 inches by 2 inches. These items must be accessible without opening the main compartment.

6. CONFIGURE FOR AIR OR CONFINED SPACE INGRESS: Before helicopter operations or confined space entry, unbuckle the shoulder straps and waist belt at their base and tuck the entire suspension assembly into the "false back" zippered rear panel. Zip the compartment fully closed. This converts the pack to a snag-free duffel configuration and is a mandatory safety step.

7. TRANSITION TO GROUND CARRY: Upon exiting the aircraft or clearing the confined space, unzip the "false back" compartment and deploy the shoulder straps and waist belt. Don the pack and adjust all straps for a secure, stable fit before moving to the Casualty Collection Point.

8. DEPLOY AS AN ON-SCENE WORKSTATION: At the CCP, place the pack on the ground or a tarp. Do not stand it vertically. Fully unzip the clamshell opening to lay the pack flat, creating an organized, visible workspace with all contents accessible simultaneously.

9. EXECUTE INTERVENTIONS FROM STAGED LOCATIONS: Access tools from their systematically staged locations as interventions are performed. The pre-mission C-A-B-C configuration is designed so that the correct gear is always in a predictable position under operational stress.

10. CONDUCT SYSTEMATIC REPACK FOR EGRESS: After patient care, conduct a full inventory and repack all equipment into designated pouches. Confirm all modular pouches are firmly seated on hook-and-loop panels, close and secure all zippers, and reconfigure the suspension system based on the egress method: stowed for air transport, deployed for ground movement.
