Quick Overview

The Rothco Tactical Breakaway First Aid Kit is a field-deployable Basic First Aid system designed for operators managing minor to moderate injuries such as lacerations, abrasions, and sprains in training, range, and low-to-moderate threat environments.

The kit's defining capability is its rip-away pouch system, which mounts to any MOLLE-compatible platform via a rigid backing plate and hook-and-loop interface. A side-release buckle provides secondary retention during dynamic movement, and a single decisive pull deploys the entire medical pouch into the operator's hand. This design reduces response time and eliminates the constraint of working around a full equipment loadout during self-aid or buddy-aid scenarios.

Wound management components include two military bandages, one elastic bandage, multiple sterile pads in varying sizes, one Telfa non-adherent pad for burns and abrasions, twelve adhesive bandages, and two adhesive tape rolls. Antiseptic capability includes hydrogen peroxide, antibiotic ointment packets, alcohol prep pads, BZK towelettes, and examination gloves. Tools include tweezers, an instant cold pack, aspirin packs, and sugar packets, each with specific administration protocols that operators must understand before deployment.

This kit is designated for Basic First Aid interventions only. It does not contain a tourniquet, hemostatic gauze, or chest seals, and is explicitly inadequate for life-threatening hemorrhage from penetrating trauma. Personnel operating in high-threat environments are directed to augment this kit with a CoTCCC-recommended tourniquet, hemostatic gauze, vented chest seals, and trauma shears.

Field Application Steps

1. SCENE SAFETY AND ASSESSMENT: Confirm the immediate area is safe before approaching the casualty. Relocate the casualty if the environment presents an active threat.

2. DON EXAMINATION GLOVES: Put on the included examination gloves before any patient contact. Body substance isolation is your first priority and protects both you and the casualty from cross-contamination.

3. ACCESS THE KIT: Announce that you are accessing medical. Release the side-release buckle with one hand while securing a firm grip on the pouch grab handle with the other.

4. DEPLOY THE POUCH: In one firm, decisive motion, pull the pouch away from the MOLLE backing plate. The hook-and-loop panel will release and the pouch will be free in your hand.

5. POSITION AND OPEN: Move to the casualty and place the pouch on the ground or on their body next to the injury. Pull both zipper pulls simultaneously to open the pouch completely flat for maximum supply access.

6. CONTROL BLEEDING: Place a sterile pad, sized 3 inches by 3 inches, directly on the wound. Instruct the casualty to apply firm, direct pressure and maintain it continuously.

7. DRESS THE WOUND: Secure the sterile pad using a military bandage or elastic bandage. Wrap with consistent pressure, not so tight as to compromise circulation. Check capillary refill distal to the dressing to confirm adequate blood flow.

8. CLEAN SECONDARY ABRASIONS: Use hydrogen peroxide or BZK towelettes to irrigate and clean debris from abrasions. Restrict hydrogen peroxide use to superficial wounds only. Apply antibiotic ointment after cleaning and cover with adhesive bandages or sterile pads as appropriate.

9. ADMINISTER SUPPLEMENTAL AID AS INDICATED: Apply the instant cold pack to sprains, strains, or bruising by striking firmly and shaking to activate. If the casualty is conscious and a hypoglycemic emergency is suspected, administer sugar packets. Administer aspirin only with the casualty's confirmed consent and confirmed absence of allergies or contraindications.

10. MONITOR AND PREPARE FOR EVACUATION: Keep the casualty calm and monitor the dressing for bleed-through. Prepare for evacuation to a higher level of care as the mission dictates. After any use, take the kit out of service until it is fully inventoried and all used or compromised components are replaced.
