Quick Overview

The Rothco Deluxe Tri-Fold Shovel is a compact, manually operated entrenching tool used by military personnel, emergency responders, and field operators for excavation, debris clearing, and field expedient construction across tactical, rescue, and sustainment environments.

The E-Tool's primary capability is earth moving across a full range of soil conditions, including sand, mud, snow, and hard-packed earth. Its heavy-duty steel blade features a sharpened leading edge for ground penetration and an integrated serrated edge for severing roots, packed ice, and dense vegetation. The tri-fold shaft collapses to approximately one-third of its deployed length, making it a field-ready tool for operators who require high capability in a minimal footprint.

The locking and articulation mechanism is the most operationally critical system on the E-Tool. A threaded locking collar secures the shovel head in either the 180-degree conventional shovel position or the 90-degree pick and hoe position. Deployment protocol requires the operator to confirm collar engagement by applying moderate pressure to the back of the blade before commencing work, as an insufficiently tightened collar is the most common failure point.

Readiness protocols require pre-use inspection of the blade, shaft, hinges, and locking collar, followed by post-use cleaning, drying, and lubrication as needed. Long-term storage standards specify a clean and dry state, preferably within the storage pouch in a climate-controlled environment, to preserve mechanism integrity and prevent corrosion between operational deployments.

Field Application Steps

1. REMOVE FROM STOWAGE: Extract the E-Tool from its storage pouch or vehicle mount. Confirm the tool is clean and undamaged before proceeding.

2. EXTEND THE SHAFT: Grasp the D-style handle and fully extend both folding shaft sections until straight. The sections remain rigid under operational load once deployed.

3. DISENGAGE THE LOCKING COLLAR: Firmly grasp the threaded locking collar at the base of the shaft. Rotate counter-clockwise several full turns to disengage the threads and allow free movement of the shovel head.

4. SET HEAD POSITION: Unfold the shovel head to the required configuration. For conventional digging, extend the head to the 180-degree in-line position. For breaking compacted or frozen ground in confined spaces, position the head at 90 degrees to the shaft.

5. SECURE THE LOCKING COLLAR: Rotate the locking collar clockwise until hand-tight. Apply firm, even pressure to ensure full thread engagement.

6. CONFIRM LOCK BEFORE USE: Apply moderate pressure to the back of the blade before commencing work. A loose collar will cause the head to collapse under load. If any movement is detected, re-tighten before proceeding.

7. EXECUTE DIGGING OR CUTTING OPERATION: Use the 180-degree configuration for standard excavation, sandbag filling, and material clearing. Use the 90-degree configuration for pick and hoe operations where a full swinging arc is not possible. Engage the serrated edge for root, ice, or dense vegetation cutting as required.

8. CLEAN ALL COMPONENTS POST-USE: Remove all soil, mud, snow, and organic matter using a stiff brush and water as necessary. Pay close attention to locking collar threads and hinge points.

9. DRY AND LUBRICATE: Thoroughly dry the entire E-Tool to prevent corrosion. Apply a light coat of CLP or similar machine oil to hinge pins and the threaded collar if stiff. Wipe off any excess.

10. STOW THE E-TOOL: Rotate the locking collar counter-clockwise to loosen the head, fold the head parallel to the shaft, collapse both handle sections inward, and place the clean and dry tool into its storage pouch.
